Dullest year for Bengali movies? Trade analysts search for answers

With the releases like 'Bela Shese', 'Kadambari', 'Ebar Shobor' and 'Open Tee Bioscope,' the first half of the last year was as fruitful as the second half of the year which had bigger releases. This year, it's a different story. According to the experts, the box-office is going through a drought with most of the films bombing at the box-office. Except Praktan, the year has not witnessed any big hit till now. The commercial films are not doing good, while the parallel movies, instead of good contents are failing to generate business. However, not all the producers are disappointed with the business of their film. Prosenjit Chatterjee, as an example, is content with the business of 'Shankhachil'. The actor turned producer said, “The film released during assembly elections. We have been able to breakeven.” Mahendra Soni, the director of Venkatesh Films also supported the same telling, "The business of a mainstream Bengali film and socalled ‘new age parallel’ films cannot be compared as both have different chains of theater releases. I don’t see anything alarming for the Bengali film industry. This year films like Ki Kore Toke Bolbo, Power, Baastushaap and Cinemawala have seen good business.”
