Zero Review: Shah Rukh Khan Stands Tall Amidst The Rubble of Second-Half
As unique as Zero is as a film with an unconventional love story set between two people who face different physical challenges, the film must click with the audience or the characters must resonate. Else, the terrific efforts put forth by the stars go waste.
When we get to know that Shah Rukh Khan is playing a character very unlike of him, the expectations go beyond limits. Reaching such expectations is nothing new for the Bollywood Badshah nor to the director Anand L. Rai who delivered movies like Tanu Weds Manu.
With star heroines like Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma playing differently challenging roles, Zero has everything it takes to be a memorable film that will be talked about in the coming years. Let's join our hands with Bauua Singh and take a ride from Meerut to Mars and assess the feelings later. Chalo!
Meanwhile, remember this dialogue by Bauua Singh as a return ticket from places unknown. Kahaniyon mein suna tha ki mohabbat me Aashiq chand tak le aate hai, saale humne yeh baat seriously lein lee.
The story of Bauua Singh
Bauua Singh is already so popular that we get a feeling that we already know him inside out. Such was the spell created by Shah Rukh Khan. He is a, to be politically correct, vertically challenged person or to be frank like the man himself, he is a dwarf. He wears his heart on his sleeve and just like in such cases, he loses his heart. Literally. To the Bollywood superstar Babita Kumari played by Katrima Kaif. But like all the long expected star turns, she appears a bit late in the proceedings.
Now coming to Bauua Singh, King Khan weaves his magic right from the word go like we expected him to. The audience are charmed to no end. After all, he is hailed as the king of romance. But in the world of this story, his short height becomes a hurdle in getting matches.
He is already 38 which is considered a elderly age for a man to get married. Now, he comes across Aafia Bhinder. He perceives her to be his equal as she suffers from cerebral palsy and is wheelchair bound.
As she cannot exactly stand every minute, when she is seated in her chair, she matches the height of our hero. Like he says in his inimitable style...
Woh Mere Barabar Thi, Main Uske Barabar... Agar Uske Sath Hota Na To Zindagi Barabar Ke Katte, Par Zindagi Kaatne Kisai The, Humai To Jeene Thee.
Slowly but steadily, (the movie feels very long you know?), their interactions come to fruitition. But this is when things take a drastic turn as a star literally falls between them. Babita Kumari joins him from the starry Bollywood. He is smitten is an understatement.
She is on a downward spiral both in her career and life which makes Bauua to be caught in the whirlpool of downfall. He is termed as the eponymous Zero by both Babita and Aafia. How all this turns out and from where the mission to Mars comes out and how Bauua Singh finds the real meaning of life form the rest of the story.
Anushka Sharma as the NASA grade scientist with a unfortunate shortcomings is excellent in the role. It is no surprise that Katrina Kaif badly wanted to play this role than the starry Babita Kumari. Afia his both the screen time and the range emotions any actor wants to display at least once in their career. Katrina nevertheless suited the role of a fading superstar to no end. She reinvented herself in this film. In the song Husn Parcham, she's damn hot. But it is not her glamorous that comes to the fore in this film. The actress.
Anand L. Rai created a triumvirate that is all the more rare in commercial cinema. Anushka excelled herself in this film. For the most part. But this cannot be her best role unfortunately. But the minutest of the expressions she has come up with and the efforts she has put in realizing this role are definitely praiseworthy. We laugh with her. We share her anger and we do whatever it takes to make her happy. Like Bauua Singh does in the end.
Sheeba Chaddha as Bauaa's mother is amazing in her role. The chemistry she shares with Shah Rukh Khan makes us believe that they are real life mother and son. Tigmanshu Dhulia as the father of protagonist is excellent. Zeeshan as Guddu Singh is lost in translation. He is the buddy of Bauaa and helps him in many ways. But the character is undercooked. The many star cameos make for an electrifying experience for us. Watching Shah Rukh and Salman Khan on the screen together is a brilliant feeling.
Anand L. Rai disappoints
Many other actors come and go in flashes and did their best tonlift the proceedings. But it is where Anand L. Rai failed badly. The setup, the narration in the first half are first rate. But the proceedings go out of hand in the second half. The characters we want to root for just makes appearances but don't feel organic as they should be. There are several narrative loopholes and cinematic liberties taken in liberal doses. What starts as a winning journey from the director ends up as an unfortunate self indulgence.
The songs are amazing. Especially the way Mere Naam Tu is pictiruses make younmarvel at the imagination. The famous Husn Parcham is as electrifying as it gets. Heer Badnaam goes wih the flow and Ishaaqbaazi is another highlight with the reunion on the big screen. The duo of the Khans rock. The background score is equally good. The interludes for each character are conceived in a brilliant manner. Ajay Atul gave their life for this film.
The cinematography by Manu Anand is terrific. The visuals are as grand as the dreams of Bauua Singh. The visual effects work for the most part but we can notice few glaring errors in a couple of scenes. Nevertheless, its a good job done. The art department has done a tremendous work. The settings right from Bauaa's humble beginnings to the the starry glitz of Mumbai to the surprise in the end, work better than the narration by Anand L. Rai. The editing is done well. But nothing special. The length of the film in the first half cannot be found out as the flow is breezy. But the same cannot be said for the second half.
Shah Rukh Khan has give his heart and soul for Zero. It should have been a tribute to the actor who entertained us for more than two and a half decades. But that doesn't happen with Zero unfortunately. It is a marvel to watch him as Bauaa on the screen and he clearly stands tall among the rubble if the second half of this film. A one time watch at least for Shah Rukh Khan and can be avoided if you don't want to spoil your mood. After all, the expectations are too high for the movie's own good.
- Shah Rukh Khan as Bauaa Singh
- Anushka Sharma
- The first half
- Electrifying cameos
- Self indulgent narration in the second half
- Listless direction
- Too much of cinematic liberty

Zero is Awesome Movie... The Length Of The Movie Could Have Been Shortened. But The Performance Of SHAHRUKH KHAN SIR Was Excellent . SRK SIR Nailed The Role Of Bauua Singh .
I am not a srk fan...i watched it because of my friend...but after watching i realised it was a must watch movie....and having a complete unique concept with great vfx
One of the best movie till date.... Srk A real king of Acting in Indian CHINEMA.
One cannot hesitate to say that Zero is the most awaited Indian film of the year. The stellar casting, grand production values, the music and the brilliant trailer have all added together to take the expectations sky-high. The film has finally made it to the theatres and the audience are totally loving the film and especially Shahrukh Khan’s performance as Bauua Singh. The first half of the film is said to be very entertaining with SRK completely stealing the show.
Katrina Kaif is also said to have done an amazing in a complicated role but the brownie points go to Anushka Sharma who has performed a challenging role exceptionally well. The first 1 hour of the film is said to have filled with lots of fun moments until the entry of Katrina, after which things slow down a bit. However, the first half is said to have worked.
Aanand L Rai is known for bringing up sensible love stories with his mark and Zero is also said to the same kind of film. He along with his high standard technical team who did superb VFX work are being praised for taking the VFX in Indian Cinema to the next level. However, Aanand seems to have done an okayish job in the second half of the film.
That's it for the public talk and live updates of Zero movie.
What is Zero About?
Zero is the film which has become the talk of the town in the lead up to its release and it's for all the right reasons. It stars Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan playing the role of Bauua. But what is the specialty of Bauua so much so that people started chanting his name once the promo materials are out? Bauua is not your average hero role played by the superstar of a hero. There are more than many reasons for people rooting for.
By the fag end of the trailer, both the heroines call Bauua a big Zero. Why? What is the equation between the lead ladies and the vertically challenged Bauua Singh? And by the way, the heroines in this film are real heroines. One a NASA scientist with cerebral palsy and the other is a fading superstar Babita Kumari. And the characters are played respectively by two of the biggest heroines of Bollywood in the present day. Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif.
Bauua... I mean Zero promises
An intriguing story of Bauua Singh
Bauua Singh is a 38-year-old man with height issues. Not the fear of heights. To be more diplomatic, he is vertically challenged. He is pint-sized before the full-blown beauty of Babita Kumari and the brainy Aafia Yusufzai Bhinder. But he has a big heart. So much so that he never let his personality or lack of it to affect his outlook on life. He is as confident as an IIT student before his ordinary cousins who study in one of the hundred engineering colleges.
Bauua like anyone who comes of age looks for matches and as obvious is the case with persons like him, no girl show interest in him. That such a legendary romantic hero in Indian Cinema playing the role of a guy who fails to find a match in itself is the testament of the story. His tryst with these two women and his voyage to find the worth of a man in the broader terms sure to interest all the film buffs. And rightly, Zero has seen a lot of buzz even before the trailer was released.
Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif
Need we say anything about these two girls who ruled Bollywood for more than a decade? Anushka who has been experimenting of late has played the role of a scientist with cerebral palsy. A Tribute to Stephen Hawking? Not exactly, but it's a challenging role nevertheless. Not to talk about the cynical humorous she has to generate sitting in the wheelchair. She is the first woman who shows an interest in Bauua. Or whom Bauua thinks is accessible to him. One who is in his plane like he tells us in the trailer.
Katrina Kaif is the quintessential glamour girl of Indian Cinema. She has all the attributes to become a big star and she has proved to be one. She plays a role which is quite unlike her real life self and quite the star of who Katrina really is. Babita Kumari's romantic tryst with Bauua Singh is as amusing as it is interesting. If this chapter is as engaging on the screen, Zero will shoot the upper side of 500 crores in moolah.
Team assembled by Anand L. Rai
Red Chillies Entertainment of Shah Rukh Khan and Colour Yellow Productions by Anand L. Rai have produced this epic romantic drama. Anand L. Rai himself helms this super prestigious project starring India's biggest stars. The music for this film is composed by Ajay and Atul with guest composing by Tanishk Bagchi. The songs are already a rage especially Husn Parcham shot exquisitely on Katrina Kaif is special in many ways.
The cinematography by Manu Anand is very good looking with various shots elevated the storytelling in the trailer. Additionally, Anand L. Rai always takes care of every little character in his movie and with some of the highly talented actors like Tigmanshu Dhulia, Sheeba Chaddha, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in the star cast, acting-wise, Zero is going to be a tour dear force.
And the big stars
The additional attraction to an already great package of Zero comes in the form of cameos by some of the biggest names in Bollywood. Salman Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Alia Bhatt, Karishma Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, and Deepika Padukone. And then this is the final film of Sridevi is enough to wet the eyes with nostalgia. With this much cast and Shah Rukh Khan in a demanding role unlike anything he had played till now makes Zero a must watch film this weekend. We're sure, Zero is like Zero Gravity. A rare hit in the sea of several 100 crores club films. SRK owes us this much. And he seems to be delivering this time.
Keep watching for Zero review, rating, and complete analysis. Stay tuned.
