Yatra tells the fictionalized version of the iconic Padayatra (walkathon) of the late Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy the then leader of opposition in the year 2003. The film starts with Gauru Charitha Reddy arriving at YSR's home to seek help from him. Despite the political differences he has with her family, YSR assures her of an MLA seat in the same constituency of her father despite the Party head have other ideas.
After establishing the character of YSR with a few thoughtfully orchestrated incidents, the scene shifts to the election announcement. The then Chief Minister prepones the elections in order to cash in on the disunity among the opposition and to unsettle them. This leads to despair in YSR and the national party he serves. They are not ready for the elections nor are they have the resources to fend off the onslaught of the wily Chief Minister.
With no other option in sights, YSR thinks about retiring from politics. When he announces this with a heavy heart, his followers and the people at large who treat him as their leader ask him to reconsider. After observing the current situation and understanding that by being politicians, they are actually away from people. YSR devises a Padayatra so that he can mingle with people and become one among them and learn people's problems.
How he fights with the party heads who are not readily welcoming his ideas and the party men who oppose his raise in the eyes of people and make padayatra a success? How YSR became the face of the party in Andhra Pradesh and became the Chief Minister with the support of people and fulfilled his promises form the rest of the film.
Yatra was positively received by the critics and the audience. Made on a relatively low budget, the movie turned out to be a commercial success. Mammootty's performance as Dr. YSR earned him high critical acclaim. Director Mahi V. Raghav was praised for sticking to the point and his honest presentation of the content.
