Viswasam tells the story of Thooku Durai who is demigod like figure in the village Koduvilaarpatti in interior Tamil Nadu. the story starts with Thooku was asked to help the trouble-free running of a thiruvizha (a local festival) by the villagers. Thooku ensures that the thiruvizha goes on without any issues by fighting his rival who was planning to play spoilsport. Post this, his aunts and grandmother chide him for wasting his own life and ask him to bring his estranged wife and daughter back.
Thooku Durai leaves the village to fulfill the wish of his family and goes to Mumbai to bring his wife and daughter back. 10 years ago, Thooku Durai was a rice Mill owner in the village and settles the matters in the village when justice needs to be served. On one such occasion, he comes across Dr. Niranjana who comes to the village as part of a medical camp. Niranjana initially misunderstands him for his rough ways and even complains about him to the police once. But when Thooku saves her from a rogue politico, she understands him.
Love blossoms and they eventually get married. Niranjana like a good wife doesn't want him to involve in other's matters anymore but when, after their daughter, Shwetha was born, Thooku was attacked by one of his rivals for revenge. Thooku bashes them but gets injured a bit in the process. The injury to him causes his daughter to pass out. Niranjana has enough of this and leaves him. How and if Thooku gets united with his wife form the rest of the story.
Viswasam received mixed reviews when released but the family and mass audience embraced it with both hands when released during the Pongal season. It went on to become a blockbuster and is the second highest grosser in Tamil Nadu state behind Baahubali 2.
