Varnyathil Aashanka is actor-director Siddharth Bharathan's third outing as a director. Scripted by noted theater director Thrissur Gopalji, the plot of the movie revolves around a heist planned by four thugs to make some quick money and what happens when they come to cross path with a fifth guy, who has a back story of his own. The movie is indeed another attempt at the yet-to-be explored terrain of realism in Malayalam cinema.
The director seems to have maintained a balance in mixing the humor and the realism and the movie is never ambitious to be a potboiler at any point. The movie put forth to the viewer the present day scenarios that one is familiar with; demonetization, closing down of bars, hartal, political violence, and such.
'Varnyathil Aashanka' does not pretend at any point to be a boisterous comedy made to provide you an endless laughter spree. But however, one might find certain scenes a little too bland and lengthy. Also, a staggering end was something the director could not save 'Varnyathil Aashanka' from.
The movie has some impressive performances. While Sooraj Venjaramoodu scores top in his role of a simpleton named Tips Dayanandan, Kunchakko Boban's performance as a local goon is also remarkable. The rest of the cast also did their best in essaying the roles they have been assigned with.
'Varnyathil Aashanka' has its fair share of flaws. But the highlight of the movie is that it makes the viewer overlook its shortcomings and captivates one with hearty humor and mellow realism.
Final Verdict: A movie that should be watched and appreciated as a novel attempt.

Varnyathil Aashanka Preview
Varnyathil Aashanka directed by Siddharth Bharathan stars Kunchako Boban, Chemban Vinod, Suraj Venjaramood, Shine Tom Chacko and Manikandan R Achari in the pivotal roles. The movie written by Thrissur Gopalji is touted to be a satirical comedy set in present Kerala.
Set in Thrissur, the movie is a tale about four rogues 'Kowta' Shivan, 'Paara' Wilson, 'Chembakara' Gilbert and Pratheesh and what happens when they come to cross path with 'Tips' Dayanandan, a good for nothing fellow who lives off on his wife's hard earned money.
Kunchako Boban's performance as 'Kowta' Shivan is something to look forward to about the movie. The actor who pulling off an altogether different character in the movie different from his usual chocolate persona. Suraj Venjaramoodu's recent performances were all a delight to see and his 'Tips' Dayaanandan is also something to watch out for. Situational humor is something one would expect from a movie about rogues unless it is touted to be mawkish drama. And when it is from Siddharth Barathan one has a reason to believe so, too.
