Adithya Varma: Dhruv Vikram Is The Find Of The Year
The story of a medico going on a path of self-destruction has become a sort of anthem for the urban youth. Of course, despite its classy narration, it has been embraced by the small town boys too. There are accusations that it is promoting male chauvinism and toxic masculinity. But girls too flocked when the original Arjun Reddy released. And even when the Bollywood remake Kabir Singh hit the screens. What's in this story?
Adithya Varma is the third time the story is told on the big screen and the second retelling. All within the space of two years. And the remakes are just 5 months and a day apart. Is there anything news on the offering for those who have already watched the earlier films? Of course, the presence of Dhruv Vikram adds a curiosity factor for the Tamil audience. But with the streaming services at their heights, are there anyone who have not watched at least one of the two - Arjun Reddy or Kabir Singh?
So, with the story of the film out of the way, let's concentrate how the film is translated onto the big screen to suit the tastes of the Tamil audience. Fans of the original, rest assured that the film is a faithful remake to the original. There aren't those many changes in the film as there are in the Bollywood remake. But the director Gireesaya is successful in bringing Tamil sensitivities into the proceedings. The shot making is excellent and the visual language of the film has the same classy feeling as Arjun Reddy and Kabir Singh.
Dhruv Vikram is a revelation. The youngster who was wrongfully trolled for his looks when the Bala's version teaser was released is stunningly charming. Even more so than both Vijay Deverakonda and Shahid kapoor in certain scenes. He is a natural when it comes to acting (genetics and hereditary not withstanding). His ultra-youthful exuberance worked quite well as a differentiating factor for the film. He is certainly a find of the year.
Banita Sandhu who played the heroine/Preethi is good. There is a different angle to her character - that of Preethi too harbors feelings towards Adithya. She is decent in her looks. Her styling is better than that of Shalini Pandey in Arjun Reddy and Kiara Advani in Kabir Singh. But she lacked the untouched cuteness factor of Shalini. She did well for the most part but lacked the punch in climax confrontation.
The music of the film is unexpectedly good and so is the cinematography. The editing has nothing to write about. Neither good nor bad. The production design is superb. The production values are top-notch. But the return on investment may not be positively good as the production obviously ran over-budget due to re-shoot.
Adithya Varma is a treat for those who love this kind of film and those who have not watched Arjun Reddy or Kabir Singh. For the others, they may give it a try as Dhruv did very well. but depends on how much they want to experience the same film again.
