Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven Review: Watch It Only For Simbu

The premise

Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven is an unabashedly Simbu star vehicle and the makers made no bones about it from the beginning. After all, the Telugu film on which it is based on (Attarintiki Daredi) was spun around the star power of its lead actor Pawan Kalyan. But here the difference is Sundar C. donning the director's hat. The original movie is more about class with mass elements, but Sundar C. is known for out and out mass entertainment.

Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven pits Simbu's Rajaa against the mighty Ramya Krishnan who is known for powerfully etched independent women roles. Veteran actors Nasser and Prabhu Ganeshan play two crucial roles, in fact, the film's anchor points involve them. While Catherine Tresa is cast against type as a trado girl, Megha Akash too received against the type role as a modern-day girl. But all these are dominated and outshined by the star o the show, Simbu. Let's dive in and see how it all worked with Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven review.

The story

Rajaa is a highly pampered but very able heir of a huge business empire (so huge that he can even buy a railway station during the climax just like that in the climax or evacuate it. No spoiler). He is introduced with a carefully choreographed action sequence where none of his clothes move an inch out of place. Post-that, he is asked by his grandfather (the grisly Nasser in a well-cast part) to bring his daughter (Rajaa's aunt) who was estranged for a reason we all expect. Mayying below their class.

Like the King-to-be he is Rajaa and his assistants land in India in a chartered flight, and with just a snap of fingers buy a costly car from a beleaguered owner (of course, they pay him well) and start their operation famously termed as unplanned. Rajaa depends only on his instincts. They spot Rajaa's uncle in the airport and duly follow him and save him when he had a heart attack in his car.

Promptly, Raja is hailed as a savior and is offered with whatever he wants. But he chooses to be content with a driver job in the already crumbling business. How, and in what way he mingle with the family, convince his aunt and reunite her and her large extended family with his family form the rest of the story.

Simbu and others

Simbu, as expected, is terrific right from the looks to emotions. But he is presented in a rugged manner in contrast to the near metrosexual charm of Pawan Kalyan in the original film. This move might have worked for Sundar C. style of the screenplay but undid some of the finesse expected from the film of this genre. Nevertheless, he satiates the thirst of his fans who have been waiting to watch him in an all-round masala role for a long time. But his emotional performance in the climax wins even the naysayers.

Though Ramya Krishnan's role is so crucial to the film, it was underwritten. She did well as usual but couldn't lift the role above the mediocrity of presentation. Prabhu Ganeshan sleepwalked in a role which is an anchor for the plot. Nasser is good in another crucial role. Catherine Tresa is presented in a classy way but e couldn't help but think that she gets another loosu ponnu role in the movie. Tough Megha Akash is the main female lead of the film, she lacked the charm of Samantha in the original. But she tried her best to make the character tick.

Writing and direction

Sundar C. has done a good job of converting the film to suit the Tamil nativity but something that made the original a top class popcorn entertainer is lost in translation. The narration appears old fashioned. Though he used the comedy setpieces from the original, he executed them in a lewd manner. The screenplay too fails to be super-engaging. The dialogues, especially the punches are a mix of nativized ones from the original and a rehash of Sundar C.'s previous work.

The crew

The music by Hiphop Tamiha paled in comparison to the expectations when it comes to the songs. The background score is good to an extent. The cinematography by Gopi Amarnath is good. The color palettes used are apt to the narration. The visuals are striking especially in the action sequences. The editing could have been better. Though there is no trimming needed, the transitions are not done well. The produci=tion design is superb. The making of the film is first class.

If you expect a Simbu film written for him as his star vehicle, you will enjoy it. But if you want a classic Sundar C. comedy entertainer, you may end up disappointed as he takes you back to the 1990s. Anyway, as a family entertainer after Viswasam, Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven works in parts. But it leaves you with a feeling that it could have been better. A decent one time watch this weekend, if not better. But be warned, it's not for everyone.

  • All-round work by Simbu
  • Basic subject

  • 1990s style of making
  • Lack of depth in the proceedings

Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven Live Updates & Public Talk

Simbu starrer Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven is one of the most-awaited movies in early 2019. Simbu who stormed back to form with Chekka Chivantha Vaanam is hoping to continue his success. As his fans proclaim for the last few weeks, he is bored with giving hit movies, it is time for a blockbuster. The movie s the official Tamil remake of Telugu blockbuster Attarintiki Dare di. It has all the ingredients to be a perfect family entertainer with ample mass elements. This is what Simbu and his fans need and the movie hits the screens today worldwide.

The movie is hailed as a perfect Sundar C. style of entertainer. It appears that the movie is loved by the audience but the critics are divided over the general presentation and the characterization of a few crucial characters. Emotionally driven climax section is one of the main USP of this outing. Simbu is said to have delivered his absolute best after a long time. Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven is a formulaic family entertainer that mostly works. There are very few directors who make a better template film than Sundar C.

The unexpected STR outperformed his recent outings. Watchable mainly for a neat package of the commercial template which is been enhanced by the meaty character of Simbu. His dances, action, comedy, and emotions everything worked for the film. The film is a treat for the family audience after Viswasam. His heroic moments and the performance in the climax portion take the film to the next level.

What is Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven About?

Either as Simbu or as STR or in the full form of his first name Silambarasan, in whatever way you remember him, as an actor and as a star Simbu is an enigma. Now, he is coming up with Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven, an action comedy drama which is game for his enigmatic stardom. He is fresh off the success of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam and a bit of resurrection of his lost stardom. Joining hands with him is the commercialest director of Tamil Cinema, Sundar. C.

The film has a top-notch star cast in the form of Ramya Krishnan, Nasser, Prabhu, and Suman apart from the presence of Megha Akash and Catherine Tresa as the lead ladies. With a strong base in the form of Tollywood's one of the most loved blockbuster Atharintiki Daaredi, Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven is bristling with all the energy to entertain us this weekend. Let's dive in and check if this romantic family action comedy has in offer for us.

Vatha Rajavathaan Varuven Promises

Simbu in full flow

It's been a long time since Simbu was seen in a role that makes the best of his mass entertaining talents. Though he was apparently the protagonist in Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, the final punch was stolen by Vijay Sethupathi not just because of the plot twist but also because of his understated but powerful performance.

Now, it is high time, Simbu returns to the place where he belongs (at the top of the list of entertainers) and delivers a sucker punch of a performance of action/comedy/emotions/heroism. The role of Rajaa has everything he needs it to have if what is evidenced by the basic story in the original. And he looked surprisingly good in all the moments that are on display in the trailer. Expect a blast of time for Simbu fans.

Ramya Krishnan vs Simbu

As per the story of the film, it is evidenced from the source material that Simbu's Rajaa comes to the city (presumably Chennai) from foreign country in order to persuade her to reunite with the extended family to fulfill the wish of his grandfather i. e. her father. So, it is virtually Ramya Krishnan vs Simbu. Fire meets fire as both are known for their firebrand natures, at least on the screen. Their on-screen interactions will offer a lot of thrills to the audience for sure.

Sundar C. direction

Director turned actor turned director Sundar C. is known for his versatility in handling various subjects but it is in the entertainment segment that he shined the brightest. With a lot of scope for entertainment in the film and several great setpieces, Sundar C. the director will have a field day with the film. With highly talented actors like Ramya Krishnan, Nasser, Suman, Prabhu Ganeshan, and last but not least Simbu, Sundar is sure to deliver another memorable blockbuster.

Team assembled by Lyca Productions

Allirajah Subaskaran bankrolls this prestigious film on Lyca Productions. A host of talented technicians have been roped in for the film apart from the director Sundar C. in the form of Hiphop Tamizha for music and Gopi Amarnadh for cinematography. For a film that is made on such a lavish scale, Gopi Amarnadh's track record in cinematography is consistently good. Moreover, he has worked with Sundar C. in the past is an added advantage in realizing the director's vision.

Hiphop Tamizha is a phenomenon in Tamil music and the title song for the film is already a rage these days. Their background score for this film which is a mix of genres should essentially form the backbone and they are ones to disappoint remotely.
