Uncle Review & Rating|
Girish Damodar directorial debut Uncle is touted to be a family drama which portrays the relationship between a 17-year-old girl and his father's friend which puts a family in a very unusual situation. Mammootty stars in the title role of the movie as Uncle while CIA fame Karthika Muraleedharan play the other pivotal role. Actor Joy Mathew, who made his debut as a screenwriter with the 2012 critically appreciated movie Shutter which he also directed, has scripted Uncle. He will also be seen essaying a key character in the film. Muthumani, Vinay Forrt, KAPC Lalitha, Mani, appear in other important roles of Uncle produced by Sajai Sebastian and Saritha Ann Thomas under the banners ABRA Films International and SJ Films. Shruthy, the teenage daughter of Vijayan, gets stuck in Ootty because of an unexpected hartal. Krishnakumar, an old friend of Vijayan, runs to Shruthy while he was on his way to Kozhikode after a business trip. He offers Shruthi a lift and both the parties start their journey to Kerala together. Meanwhile, Vijayakumar and his wife are left uncomfortable and worried about the whole situation as Krishnakumar has always been an infamous Romeo with women. The rest of the movie narrates the incidents that happen during the Krishnakumar's and Shruthy's trip home while whether the uncle remains nice and courteous till the end form the crux of this film.
Mammootty steals the show in Uncle, equally with his good looks and cheerful performance. His character Krishnakumar comes across as a stark contradiction to the super macho roles which has ridden the actor's career for some time now and is certainly a relief to the audience who wished to see him playing convincing and close-to-life characters. Kartheeka Muraleedharan, who is making her second outing in Uncle, has delivered an impressive and a better performance this time. Muthumani, who plays the role of Shruthi's mother, delivers an excellent performance and brings in the nuance her character demands while Joy Mathew also has done just fine as a loving and worried father. The rest of the cast including KPAC Lalitha, Vinay Forrt and Mani grace the film with strong and convincing performances.
Girish Damodar and Joy Mathew have come up with a simple and gripping tale that has so much relevance in the present-day context. While they have successfully managed to keep the viewer intrigued and hooked to the plot, some of the sequences where quite unnecessary and have only added a staggering feel to this film. Another major drawback is the jerk one feels towards the climax when the film suddenly becomes preachy and melodramatic.
Final Word: Uncle is a fine and engaging film that holds some amount of relevance, espcially, in the times we live in.

What To Expect From Uncle?
Mammootty Performance In A Character With Dark Shade
In the recent past, most Mammootty movies that hit the box office except one or two are the one which fed solely on actors' star value and spared the actor in him. In Uncle, the movie features him in a mysterious character, which presumably has a negative shade. Whatsoever, it would be a real treat for the cinephiles and a section of the actor's fans to see him in a close to convincing character and added bonus is the anti-hero elements attributed to his character which the movie hopefully has.
Joy Mathew Second Writing Venture
Joy Mathew made his debut as scribe with Shutter which he also directed. The film was a endearing thriller which tickled one's nerve. Uncle marks his second outing in the shoes of a writer and it sets the anticipation high. The film, going by the trailer, seems to have thrilling storyline and unusual plot which suggest Joy Mathew has come up with another impressive story this time too.
Karthika Muraleedharan's Second Outing
Karthika Muraleedharan who made her debut last year with the Dulquer Salmaan starrer Comrade In America is making her second outing in Uncle. Contrary to her maiden role which was a less-challenging, Uncle seems to feature the young actress in a striking role with more room for performance and to bring out her true caliber. And it is indeed something to look forward in the movie.
Breath Taking Frames Accompanied By Soulful Music
The technical quality of the film is one thing we can place the bet on as Gireesh Damodar who is making his directorial debut after a years of experience as an associate director has gathered the best in the industry as part of the crew. The movie has cinematography by Alagappan who has a profuse oeuvre to his credit. National Award winning music composer Bijibal is scoring the music for the movie while Shameer Muhammed has made the cuts. In short, there is no doubt Uncle would be a technical finesse.
