Uma directed by Srijit Mukherjee is based on a true incident that took place in George town, Canada. The incident follows Evan Leverage, a terminally ill young boy who wanted to celebrate Christmas. Fearing that he won’t be able to live till December, his mother and neighbors arranged a Christmas celebration in the town centre in the month of October. The entire town joined hands in this initiative to fulfill the child’s last wish. Moved by the heartwarming incident, Srijit directed Uma which went on to be a superhit venture of the year.
The film narrates the tale of Uma, an eleven-year-old living in abroad along with her father Himadri (Jisshu). Uma dreams to visit Kolkata to see Durga Puja. She believes her mother lives in Kolkata and she will be able to meet her one day. Uma is suffering from a rare disease. The doctor informs Himadri about the deteriorating condition of his daughter. Knowing she wouldn't be able to make it till October, Himadri decides to recreate an entire festival in Kolkata before its time. Himadri reached Kolkata along with Uma and gradually people started to join his mission of arranging an untimely Puja. While there are many who came forward with the aid of Himadri, they still have to face several hurdles to cross.
