Total Dhamaal Review: Slapstick Comedy At Its Worst
Director Indra Kumar might be one of the popular directors of the late 1990s but all of his recent films are filled with cringe-worthy scenes and lackluster comedy. Even though his last movie bombed at the box office, he somehow managed to get a huge cast to be a part of his next film Total Dhamaal which is the third installment in the Dhamaal franchise. Maybe if not for the continuation of the characters, many actors would not have been a part of this project. With so many talented actors like Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Riteish Deshmukh etc, can he recreate his own magic? Let's find out in the review of Total Dhamaal.
Total Dhamaal starts off with the introduction of all the crucial characters, and they come to know about the hidden treasure of Rs. 50 crores. Then begins the mad chase for the treasure and we get to see weird scenes thrown straight at us. Going by trailer itself one would've prepared himself/herself to witness the slapstick comedy but no would've imagined this pathetic level of comedy. The storyline itself is very thin with not much scope for comedy and Indra Kumar gives work for his imagination and that is when the film gets into trouble.
We might have seen many loud comedies but this one beats them all by a large margin as well. The never-ending mad treasure hunt not only irritates us with the old-school comedy but also tests our patience with the story all over the place. With such poorly written characters and dialogues, this was bound to happen. Though there are a few lol moments in the first half, making us not to leave the theatres in the intermission break, the second half becomes worse making us curse ourselves for not leaving the theatre.
The actors try their best to make this film watchable and if not for their screen presence and comedy timing things would've become even worse. Among the bunch of actors, it is Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit that shine the most. Even though their roles and dialogues are poorly written, they still grab our attention everytime they appear on the screen. The couple hasn't lost the magic in their onscreen chemistry and it is an absolute treat to watch them together. Ajay Devgn who earlier acted in slapstick comedy movies of Rohit Shetty, doesn't look so comfortable in this film.
Riteish Deshmukh is fun to watch and like we said earlier, even his charatcer is poorly written. However, he evokes a few laughs here and there with his expressions. His scenes with Johnny Lever are hilarious. Sanjay Mishra is extremely annoying and his chemistry with Ajay doesn't work. Arshad Warsi and Javed Jaffrey might have done a fantastic job in the earlier instalments but have nothing much to do in Total Dhamaal. Boman Irani, Mahesh Manjrekar and Esha Gupta are just about okay in their roles.
On the technical front as well, Total Dhamaal is strictly average. It is better if we do not talk about the writing. The story, screenplay and dialogues - none of them work well. The camerawork is below par and the VFX looks pretty bad. The music is outdated and the production values too are not that great. Overall, Total Dhamaal turns out to be yet another disappointment from Indra Kumar.

What is Total Dhamaal About?
Bollywood has been thriving on several successful franchises for more than a decade but nothing paid off like comedy as nowadays the audience mostly want entertainment for a couple of hours or tentpole films with goosebump moments. One (more) franchise of the genre is Total Dhamaal of the laugh riot series Dhamaal. This time, the film is not just banking on the usual suspects of the series but also several big stars.
While comedies are stapled for success in Bollywood, a comedy adventure is generally rare. From what is evidenced by the trailer of the film, Total Dhamaal is high on hilarity and thrills. We can also gather that it is a sort of treasure hunt/heist plot. Indra Kumar who helmed the previous two entries returns to direct this film headlines by the likes of Ajay Devgn and Anil Kapoor. Let's check out what Total Dhamaal promises.
Total Dhamaal Promises
Some thrills and no frill laughs
Being a mix genre film with a stress on fun and entertainment, Total Dhamaal is a story that involves several players who dare to bear with dangers in order to find a treasure. Set basically as a treasure hunt, Total Dhamaal appears like a fun adventure in the lines of Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle sans the board/video game.
It has everything from heart-stopping moments with vehicles hanging in balance on falling bridges to The hood-raising snakes in front of the man in quicksand to a man daring a tiger to face off in a manly manner (not to frighten a woman and hopefully non-misogynistic) in a comical fashion, this is a film that can catch the imagination of the fun-loving audience in all sections of the audience without being too over the top.
An enviable ensemble cast
Ajay Devgn is known not just for his macho stunts, he also headlines a comedy franchise with equal ease. The Bollywood Singham is teaming up with the evergreen Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Riteish Deshmukh, Esha Gupta apart from the renowned Johnny Lever, Arshad Warsi, Javed Jaaferi. And then there is the ever dependable Boman Irani who is game for any genre basically either in the comedy or serious roles. With such a cast, we could at least expect the film will be a sparkling fun adventure of high-quality.
Team behind Indra Kumar
Backed by top-line production companies Fox Star and Reliance Entertainment, Total Dhamaal is producer by multiple production houses including that of Ajay Devgn Ffilms. As expected for an entertainer of this sort, music plays a big role in making things tick as it has some of the biggest names in Bollywood. Sandeep Shirodkar who created the Dabangg theme composes the musical score of this film.
Keiko Nakahara’s cinematography is colourful worthy of the star cast and atmospheric apt for the adventure genre. The action choreography is also thrill-inducing with some big stunts. With everything falling in the right places, what more can we expect for a weekend entertainer? Total Dhamaal is shaping up to be a good bet to spend our hard earned cash to forget the daily troubles for a couple of hours (127 minutes to be exact)
