Thaanaa Serndha Koottam Review & Rating|
Suriya has been doing intense/angry roles these days and it's been a while since we saw him playing a happy-go-lucky guy. He is one versatile actor who can pull off any kind of role which has become an option for directors who try different things with him as the lead. But Thaana Serndha Koottam seems to be different as he is seen in a young, energetic and intelligent role which is inspired by Neeraj Pandey's Special 26. Thaana Serndha Koottam is directed by the very talented Vignesh Shivn who made a sparkling debut with Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Though Special 26 is a serious drama with an interesting plot, Vignesh Shivn changed TSK into a commercial entertainer without changing the basic premise of the film. With a stellar cast that includes the likes of the very beautiful Keerthy Suresh, Ramya Krishnan, Senthil, RJ Balaji, Karthik and others, everything about Thaana Serndha Koottam is positive till now. While Tamil cinema and Suriya's fans are in need of a pakka commercial entertainer for this Pongal season, Thaana Serndha Koottam seems to be one. Will TSK manage to impress the audience and turn out to be the much needed super hit for Suriya? Let's find out in Thaana Serndha Koottam review below:
Suriya is introduced as Iniyan, a young and talented guy who aims to become a CBI officer. But because of a corrupt officer, he loses the opportunity. He then gathers few like-minded people (Ramya Krishnan, Senthil, Shiva Shankar and Sathyam) and begin to raid the offices of those corrupt officers. A twist in the tale arises when police trap the gang and what follows next has to be seen on the big screen.
Performances wise, it has to be said that it is a one-man show from Suriya with superb support from the remaining cast. Suriya is in full flow this time and it is so good to see him in a role which is not so serious. His comedy timing, graceful dance moves, energetic screen presence is an absolute treat to watch for his fans and for any movie lover for that matter. He plays his role to the T and proves his worth as an actor once again. Apart from Suriya, there are many other good actors in the film. Keerthy Suresh is bubbly yet beautiful in a traditional Tamil girl's role and her chemistry with Suriya works big time. Ramya Krishnan gets a meaty role and she proves why she ruled the South Indian cinema for a decade. One cannot his/her eyes off her when she is on screen and she turned out to be one of the major assets of the movie. Karthik, Suresh Menon, Senthil played their roles perfectly and RJ Balaji surprises with his role in this film.
Anirudh's songs are decent and the peppy Sodakku sets up the mood nicely indicating that TSK is going to be one crazy fun ride. Cinematography by Dinesh Krishnan is terrific and he manages to bring the late 1980s feel to the viewers. The way he picturized songs like Sodakku and Peela Peela is a testimony to his talent. Editing by Sreekar Prasad is crisp and the pace with which TSK moves is good. Art director DRK Kiran does a fantastic job with sets and in recreating the magic of the 1980s. The sets used in Peela Peela song are simply superb. Production values of K.E. Gnanavelraja's studio green banner are good and they've not compromised on the budget of the film.
Vignesh Shivn is one young director who knows to keep the movie engaging and doesn't go overboard in presenting any emotion. Though he keeps the basic storyline from Special 26 as it is, Thaana Serndha Koottam looks entirely different for the fact that Vignesh Shivn has done enough to make as entertaining as possible. Even in very intense scenes, he adds a tricky and quirky one-liner which leaves us in splits. The first 15 minutes of the film is super entertaining and the way he used Suriya's star power to give the movie a headstart is laudable. Though the movie suffers from few lags here and there, Vignesh's smart direction, Suriya's terrific performance and brilliant efforts from the technical team make Thaana Serndha Koottam an entertaining watch.
Verdict: Thaana Serndha Koottam is a perfect Pongal entertainer, go for it.

Suriya and Vignesh provide a perfect Pongal entertainer
For someone who is a hardcore fan of Suriya, it is his wish to see Suriya in energetic roles with free-flowing body language. And the way TSK was publicised and the way trailer has been cut, promised me something similar is in the offering in the film. And I have to admit that I was not disappointed even a bit while coming out of the theatre this time (unlike his previous films like Si3, Maatraann etc). Right from the word go, TSK is high on entertainment with peppy mass numbers, full on comedy dialogues coupled with a decent storyline and well-written screenplay. I must this is after very long time, I have seen audience in splits in a big star hero's movie. Though there are few elevation scenes, TSK is not the typical commercial entertainer of a star hero. Suriya even allows villains to troll his height which shows how cool he is as an actor and as a human being.
Keeping Suriya's super energetic performance aside, one thing that attracted me was Vignesh's smart direction. The way he adapted Special 26 to suit the nativity of our audience is impeccable.

What is Thaanaa Serndha Koottam about?
Thaanaa Serndha Koottam is a thriller drama based on the 1987 Opera House heist and Neeraj Pandey's Akshay Kumar starrer Special 26 which released in 2013. Thaanaa Serndha Koottam has Suriya and Keerthy Suresh playing the lead roles, with a supporting cast of Karthik, Ramya Krishnan, Senthil and Suresh Chandra Menon.
The story Thaanaa Serndha Koottam is inspired from a real-life heist incidents that took place in 1987 when a group of guys posing as CBI officials raided a jewellery showroom in Mumbai and stole jewellery worth lakhs to escape unscathed. Suriya forms the head of the group including members who are experts in their own fields to pull-off any kind of heist with perfect planning, coordination and execution.
What to expect from Thaanaa Serndha Koottam?
Being a Suriya flick releasing on Pongal, the expectations don’t get higher than this. Going by the promos it looks like the actor has a winner on his hands but there are more than one reasons that make this thriller flick a must watch in the theaters.
Suriya’s towering performance
All eyes will be glued on Suriya who is in need of a big hit and it all shows in the film’s teaser, trailer and songs that have released, so far. With fans of Suriya also present in the two Telugu speaking states, the thriller is set to release in Telugu simultaneously. TSK could well become the first mega-hit of the year 2018 as a lot rests on Suriya’s shoulders.
TSK boasts of a good supporting cast which includes seasoned actors like Karthik, Ramya Krishnan, Kalaiyarasan, Nandha, RJ Balaji, Senthil, Thambi Ramaiah, Anandaraj, Sathyan, Sivasankar and Suresh Chandra Menon. Each actor is seen complimenting the other which adds a lot of sheen to the proceedings.
Vignesh Shivan’s inept direction
Director Vignesh Shivan has developed his own way of storytelling on the screen which marks his USP as a filmmaker. With multi-talents added to his persona, he looks very much in control with whatever the audiences have got to see. He has confessed that he has adapted the story of TSK in his own style to suit the local sensibilities.
Proven success formula
TSK is a remake of the Bollywood hit Special 26 which not only garnered critical acclaim but also did good business at the box-office. With Vignesh adding his deft touch to the script to suit Tamil audiences, the film is bound to get a good initial.
High production values
TSK produced by KE Gnanavel Raja under Studio Green banner always ensures great production values and promos for its films. With an enviable track record to its name, the production house is all set to add another feather to its cap.
Anirudh Ravichander has composed songs for a Suriya film for the first time and the Thaana Serndha Kootam album seems to be filled with chartbuster numbers with Sodakku, Naana Thaana and Peela Peela already hitting the right notes.
