Nachinarkiniyan aka Iniyan fails to secure a job with the CBI department because his application is thwarted by a higher official Uthaman because of a grudge he had on Iniyan's father. Also, Iniyan comes across many people who fail to secure jobs because of the bribery issue. It was in the early 1980s. 

When Iniyan finally understands that he won't get the job he coveted, he and his father feel devastated. To add insult to the injury, Iniyan's friend kills himself because not securing a job caused his wife to go away with another man (the real reason is she was just late to home from the temple and he was suffering from an inferiority complex. fed up with all this, Iniyan starts gathering similar people and form a gang. 

Iniyan also decides to rob a popular jewelry shop with his gang posing as the CBI officials. He gives an ad for Dynamic Graduates for Intelligence Officers Post and Security Officers Post. He trains them with a mock ride and gets ready for the strike. But the police are on his trail. How Iniyan's plan works out and if the police nab him and his gang form the rest of the story. 

Thaana Serndha Koottam is an official remake of the 2013 Bollywood blockbuster Special 26 which is based on the real life 1987 Opera House Heist in Mumbai. The movie is received positively by the critics and the audience. It was praised for the acting and direction but most of the critics felt it was inconsistently executed. It is released in Telugu as Gang and is noted for Suriya dubbing himself for the first time in the language.
