Super Over Review
Collegiate Definition: a selfish and excessive desire for more of something (such as money) than is needed.
So, there are three friends (3 seems to be favourite number among our young Tollywood directors) who are Kaasi (Naveen Chandra), Vaasu (Rakendumouli), and Madhu (Chandini Chowdary) who are pretty ordinary guys like their names suggest. While Kaasi is the leader of the pack obviously as Naveen Chandra played the role, Madhu is the heroine equivalent (Madhu is a favourite name for our Tollywood directors to christen their heroines).
They lead happy go lucky lives like a majority of youngsters in Telugu movies do. But there is that problem of earning money. Ah! If there is no such pressure, we don't have to slog along for a long time everyday in offices or schools. Or at doing any work! Okay! Certain people love to earn money but a few others love easy money. Our gang of friends are this type and to represent these contemporary times, IPL betting is used for this (in the movie it's named NPL). There is not much to talk about the betting thing if not for our hero losing or gaining money.
So, Kaasi wins Rs. 1.7 Cr. When he needs 40 lakhs to save his house (just a twist, not for easy money but for a sentimental reason). But that money needs to be collected from several sources and places (including hawala ways). And then there is the risk of: not getting money at all, getting chased by criminals, and may be bad cops. Such maybe-not-so-bad cop is Ajay (played by Ajay in a typecast role). How all that's well ends well forms the rest of the story. All this happens in one night.
Naveen Chandra needs to put up a poker face for the majority of the film and he did exactly so. He's a talented actor who can do any role and proved that again here. Chandini Chowdary is good as the routinely named Madhu. She has her shining moments and did well. Rakendumouli is excellent as the third among the trio. Ajay has delivered another terrific performance. Rest of the cast have come up with good enough performances to not rob the sheen off the scenes.
The story point is pretty interesting. The way the characters are introduced is nice. We get a proper sneak peek into the lives and natures of the trio. The plot point is well set up. While many may think it's a film about sports as the title is Super Over, the director has given a brilliant metaphoric twist to it. In Cricket, a Super Over is a gamble. That's what our protagonists are involved in. The writing is strong as the narration is so good despite everything that needs to happen over a night.
Proper twists are inserted at right and unexpected moments. The dialogues are colloquial. The screenplay is interesting for the most part but it loses steam in a few places. A few questions are left unanswered which may off out a few audience as our common audience doesn't like questions like our parents. A fine effort for a first time director. Praveen Varma! His direction is trendy.
The music-only background score is neat. The cinematography is super good for a direct OTT release. The chase sequences in the night are canned quite well. The editing is fine and trendy. Production values are good. The art department should be commended for creating the right atmosphere.
There are flaws in narration. Logics are left out in a few noticeable places. The way the police leaving the trio is not so convincing. Still Super Over is a good film by a highly promising filmmaker. There are no boring scenes. The thrill factor is intact. You can watch it once. Give it a chance.
Khelo Rating: 3 out of 5
