Sanju Review & Rating|
Rajkumar Hirani is one of the most successful filmmakers working in Bollywood right now and he hasn’t given a single flop yet. He directs Ranbir Kapoor and tells the amazing and fantastic story of Sanjay Dutt, a man who has lived a thousand lives in a single lifetime. Two aspects of his life are the main focal point of this film: Sanjay Dutt’s problem with drugs and how he battled its addiction, and the infamous case for holding arms, for which the actor spent time in jail. The other details like his love life and other personal details are touched upon but not in detail.
Just like any other Hirani film, Sanju too is a mixture of humor and drama and delivers a perfect combination of the both. The main emotional hold is the story of the father-son relationship between Sanjay Dutt and Sunil Dutt, and interestingly, the only time the two of them shared the screen was in Rajkumar Hirani’s own film Munna Bhai MBBS. It also gets into Sanjay’s bond with his mother Nargis Dutt, who is played by Manisha Koirala in this film.
Sanju begins with Sanjay Dutt looking for a writer to write his biography just before he is about to surrender himself after the Supreme Court passes the judgment on his jail sentence. He finds a well-known author named Winnie, played by a bubbly Anushka Sharma, who is based on the writers of this film- Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi. Here begins the story of Sanjay’s Bollywood debut and how he gets into drugs and gets addicted to them after the death of his mother.
The first half of the film deals with his addiction while the second half focuses on whether or not Sanjay Dutt should be called a terrorist. This helps in creating a lot of drama in the story and makes it an interesting watch.
Ranbir Kapoor has done a phenomenal job and has totally outdone his previous performances with this character. He has completely gotten into the skin of Sanjay Dutt and has looked like his twin brother in the film. Vicky Kaushal matches Ranbir’s level of performance with his character of Kamlesh, Sanjay Dutt’s best friends. These two characters have some of the funniest and dramatic scenes and the chemistry between them is almost perfect.
Dia Mirza as Sanjay Dutt’s wife Maanyata Dutt is successful in leaving a powerful presence all through the film. Manisha Koirala has a brief role and doesn’t get enough to do on screen. The background music is very powerful and helps the audience invest in the story completely. Songs like Kar Har Maidan Fateh and Ruby Ruby are beautifully shot and go hand in hand with the tone of the film. Rajkumar Hirani is also the editor of the film and he could have done a better job at keeping the movie crisp and tight.
There are some parts of Dutt’s life that have completely been ignored like his previous marriages and the birth of his daughter Trishala Dutt. But that is understandable as there was so much to be covered from his life. The movie does not seek to glorify Sanjay Dutt and tells an honest story of a man who has taken a lot of wrong decisions in his life. This is what makes the movie really inspirational.
All in all, Sanju is a well-made story with a great script and a powerful story of a man who despite making some mistakes, lived a terrific life. Sanju is definitely worth a watch.

Sanjay Dutt’s Drug Abuse
It is no hidden secret that Sanjay Dutt was addicted to drugs and struggled to get out of it. His father Sunil Dutt eventually put Sanjay into rehab where he found a way to get out of his drug habits but he had also lost interest in acting by then. But he decided to give it another shot and went on to become one of the biggest superstars of the 90s. The filmmakers have confirmed that they will be showing this phase of Dutt’s life in excruciating detail.
Sanjay Dutt’s Connection to the Underworld

Sanjay Dutt has been a part of many high profile love affairs with famous actresses like Tina Munim and Madhuri Dixit. Tina left him and is now married to one of the biggest businessmen in India, Anil Ambani. He also had a rough relationship with Madhuri Dixit and it has not been confirmed if Karishma Tanna is playing the role of Madhuri Dixit in the film. Along with Karishma Tanna’s role, another huge detail has been kept under wraps, that is will Sanjay Dutt’s close friend Salman Khan have a role in this movie. One can only wait for the film to release to find out for sure.
