Vasu hails from a close-knit joint family and is the kind who likes to call home at the beginning and end of the day to talk to his grandmother and the rest of his family. Sridevi hails from a family that’s the complete opposite to Srinivas' family, consisting of a business magnate father who believes the only thing that deserves his time is his work, an elder sister who going through a divorce because she’s exactly like her father, and a mother wanting for attention and love.
When the two falls in love like a pair of self-respecting Tollywood hero and heroine does, they quickly decide to get married and take the matter to their respective families as the sole focus of the film is about their marriage and the ceremony. R.K., the bride's father believes that marriage is an event in one's life and is not worth wasting a lot of time. But Srinivas' grandmother doesn't believe so. She thinks that marriage is the biggest festival/event in one's life and the ceremony must be given utmost importance.
Srinivas informs R.K. Both families meet and agree for their marriage. But having seen his elder daughter's problematic divorce, R. K. does an unthinkable and asks Srinivas to sign the divorce papers even before marriage without telling anyone. How Srinivas reacts, and how R. K. learns the importance of traditions and customs form the rest of the story.
Srinivasa Kalyanam received mildly positive to mixed reviews and became a disappointment at the box office. The critics commented upon the slow narration and wafer thin or lack of storyline, and the impracticality of the subject matter of the film. But the lead pair's performances received a positive response.
