Shah Jahan Agency Review: Chowringhee's modern-day adaptation to watch out for

The premise

Srijit Mukherjee’s Shah Jahan Regency has been one of the most anticipated films of the year for various reasons. We all know this is a screen adaptation of Shankar’s Chowringhee which was made into an iconic film before by its own name. So, this time, the director has to match up with a huge expectation.

Shah Jahan Regency story

Srijit has done a modern-day adaptation of Shankar’s novel. His characters although has different names are not much different from the book. The director has captured the flavor of the original book beautifully. Sata Bose turns Sameeran Bose, aka Sam (Abir Chatterjee), Marco Polo becomes Makararanda Pal (Anjan Dutt), Kaberi Basu is Kamalini (Swastika Mukherjee), Natahari turns Nitya Banerjee aka Nitty Gritty (Sujoy Prosad Chatterjee) in the film while Rudra, Shankar’s film counterpart played by Parambrata is like the anchor of the film. We see the world of a five-star hotel through his eyes.

Direction

Srijit has put them in modern days without doing many alterations, which is good and bad at the same time. Often, the characters don’t fit the time that the film is set in. Especially, Rudra’s character seems misfit and unreal in this world. However, the film gets engaging with the appearance of Swastika’s Kamalini. Her love story with Arnab (Anirban Bhattacharya) and its tragic turns were thoroughly engaging and heartbreaking at the same time. From homophobia to emotional manipulation to hidden insecurities, Srijit’s portrayal of every aspect of the human crisis was on spot in the movie.

Performances

Shah Jahan Regency’s greatest treasure is the performance of the ensemble cast. Anjan Dutta, Anirban Bhattacharya, Mamata Shankar everyone did justice to their respective characters. Abir Chatterjee though not that charismatic managed to shine as Samiran Bose. But, it is Swastika Mukherjee who steals the show as Kamalini. Swastika is simply at her best in the film. On the other hand, Parambrata falters in places. Film’s strongest aspect is its music that stays even after the film ends.

Finally

In short, the film is a reflection of a world living inside the city of joy only. Srijit perfectly crafted that world of a five-star hotel, its employees and guests and kept the viewers entertained with all the flavors of life that one can imagine of.

Positives

  • Story
  • Swastika Mukherjee
  • Smart execution
  • Music

Negatives

  • The length of the film could be shortened
  • Not so believable in places

Pycker Rating: 3.5 out of 5

An exceptional retelling of a classic novel b (Chowringhee by Shankar) and the equally top-class yesteryear film. Swastika Mukherjee steals the show and Abir Chatterjee proved once again why he is highly rated and can take on any role apart from playing the well loved detectives with aplomb. Each and every character, however small screen time they have, makes an impression on you and the film is one to savor in the times coming. The first great film of Tollywood in 2019.
