The story of Seethakaathi revolve s around the life and the mysterious disappearance of a thespian turned film star, Ayya Aadhimoolam. Ayya Aadhimoolam is an old school person in life. He loves the art of acting. He is a thespian who never compromised in his life for the sake of money. He is an actor par excellence. And is revered by the troupe he is associated. He gives importance to his drama-mates as if they are his family members.
On the other side is Ayya Aadhimoolam the family man. He is always short of money because of his values. He is at odds with his family. They need to run the family after all. The film, in the beginning, shows Ayya Aadhimoolam's career as a stage artist right from the 195-0s where mythologicals ruled the roost to the 1980s and the courtroom dramas. The content of his dramas/plays change but he never changed.
Finally, after 2013 (probably) he relents and take up film roles and becomes an instant superstar. A producer urges him to disappear so that his value increases multi-fold. What follows is an intense hilarious drama with a court case on one side and the real value of Ayya understood by all the concerned parties.
Seethakaathi received high critical acclaim and went on to perform well at the box office. Vijay Sethupathi's performance as Ayya Aadhimoolam won universal acclaim. Balaji Tharaneetharan's direction was praised by the critics who said that his deft handling of the subject gave weight for the film. Also, Seethakaathi was Pycker India's Best Movie of the Week when it was released (week: 17-22 December 2018).
