Rustom is a period thriller based on the real-life incident of Naval Officer K.M. Nanavati and the businessman Prem Ahuja back in the 1950s. Rustom is a Naval officer who shares a happy relationship with his wife Cynthia until he discovers her affair with Vikram, a close friend. One day he returns early from his ship deployment and to his surprise, he finds Vikram's love letters in Cynthia's cupboard and later finds them together. Rustom confronts Cynthia about the love letters and leaves with a pistol in his hand. Rustom then starts searching for Vikram. After Rustom goes to Vikram's bedroom and the servant hears three gunshots. The servant then finds the body of Vikram in the pool of blood and sees Rustom walking away with a pistol. Rustom surrenders to the police immediately.
Priti Makhija, sister of Vikram takes help of a public prosecutor to ensure a tough punishment for Rustom. Soon the news is spread in the city causing a stir. While on the other hand, Cynthia confronts Rustom in jail about her feelings. Cynthia reveals that she felt lonely when Rustom when he left for London. She also revealed that on the day of Vikram's murder, Cynthia had already broken up with him. However, the plot of the movie twists with a series of interesting and intriguing flashbacks. What happens to the career and life of Rustom and his wife Cynthia is an interesting thing to watch.
Rustom performed extremely well at the domestic as well as the overseas box office. Akshay Kumar was highly praised for his performance and even won National Film Award for Best Actor. Rustom was made on a budget of 50 crores and collected 219 crores at the box office. The soundtrack of the film was also well received by the music lovers and on top of the many chartbusters.
