Ganapatideva was the emperor of the Kakatiya dynasty who ruled the Kakatiya Empire from Orugallu (present-day Warangal, Telangana) as its Capital. Kakatiya Empire was under constant threat from the neighbours, and the king needs to be powerful. Unfortunately for them, Ganapatideva's wife gives birth to a baby girl.
But as the Dynasty is in big trouble and the people want a prince, not a princess and the rival kingdoms demand the surrendering of Kakatiyas, the minister Shiva Devaiah advises the king to announce that he had a son, not a daughter. His daughter Rudramadevi was formally designated as a son and given the male name Rudradeva, through the ancient Putrika ceremony. Rudhramadevi is even married to a woman named Muktamba.
But, during Rudramadevi’s birth, an astrologer predicted that a baby girl is born to rule the kingdom jointly with her father as his co-regent from 1259–60 under the name of Rudradeva Maharaja. Meanwhile, Rudhtramadevi falls in love with Chalukya prince, Veerabhadra. As the real identity of Radhramadevi is revealed, rivals start to attack the empire. How Rudhramadevi solves the problems and in what way she defeats the enemies with help of Gona Ganna Reddy and stabilizes the empire form the crux of the story.
Rudhramadevi was released to generally favourable reviews from the critics and became an average grosser compared to the high budget. Anushka Shetty's performance in the title role and Allu Arjun's performance as Gona Ganna Reddy received widespread acclaim. The movie became a hit in Kerala courtesy the craze for Allu Arjun. Anushka won several awards including the Ugadi Awards and Allu Arjun Critics Choice Award at SIIMA Awards.
