Raid Review & Rating|
Director Raj Kumar Gupta brings us a gripping tale of a powerful politician and his goons against an honest Income Tax officer which is set in 1981 of Lucknow. Inspired by a true story, this film manages to engage the audience and has the perfect run time of just a little over two hours to keep the plot intact. Ajay Devgn plays the role of Amay Patnaik, the Income Tax officer who along with his team goes to conduct a raid on the most powerful man in Lucknow, who is also a politician (played by Saurabh Shukla). Ileana D’Cruc plays the role of Amay’s wife who is worried for her husband because of his line of work but always supports him no matter what.
Ajay Devgn plays the role of Patnaik with great intensity and charm and is the heart of the story. In the film, he is an honest public servant with a set of moral values that he will not leave for anyone. The actor, like in most of his films, manages to throw some powerful dialogues that are sure to get the audience clapping. The main antagonist of the film is named Tauji and is played by the seasoned actor Saurabh Shukla and his performance is the highlight of the film. He manages to get some quirks and details into the character that the audience will love, despite him playing a bad guy.
Ileana D’Cruz does not have much to do in the film but she shines whenever she is on screen and looks beautiful as she does it. The 85-year-old Pushpa Joshi plays the role of Tauji’s mother who has some of the best dialogues in the film and relieves us with her humor in the most intense of scenes. The supporting cast that plays Tauji’s family and Ajay Devgn’s junior officers also do their job well.
There are some points in the film where the focus shifts from the raid to the romance between Ajay Devgn and Ileana and has some songs which seem unnecessary but do not hurt the film in any way. Ileana looks beautiful in these songs and her fans will be happy to see her shine on the screen. But the audience will be gripped to the storyline of the raid being conducted and might get taken away with these sequences.
Director Raj Kumar Gupta has created a perfect world and has stayed true to the period that the story is based in. Writer Ritesh Shah has written a tight and gripping story and the screenplay of the film has been written to perfection and will keep the audience engaged to the screen. The film has been edited by Bodhaditya Banerjee and he has kept the movie very close knit and the film runs just a little over than two hours.
The film does begin to preach towards the end and the last minutes just tells about the problems in the life of Income Tax officers but that can be ignored as ninety percent of the film is very entertaining. The whole team has come together and put out a film that is relevant and engaging at the same time.
Verdict: This is not a regular masala movie from Bollywood and has been made very well. Worth a watch!

What to expect from Raid?
The film boasts of an impressive star cast that includes the critically acclaimed actor Saurabh Shukla who never fails to impress with his performance. The cast also includes Ajay Devgn and Ileana D’crux, who were last seen together in Baadshaho and they definitely have a good chemistry going on with their characters. This impressive cast has got the audience excited about the film.
Raj Kumar Gupta had proven his talents as a director from his very first movie titled Aamir which was made on a shoestring budget. He then moved on to direct the crime thriller No One Killed Jessica which was a raging success. He is now back with another crime drama and is pairing up with Ajay Devgn, with whom he had previously worked on the film Ghanchakkar which has fans of both the actor and the director waiting for the film.
The soundtrack of the films contains two already super hit songs by Ustaad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan which includes a remake of the old classic song Khair Mang Di which has gone viral soon after its release. The other song which has gained a lot of traction among fans is titled Black which speaks about black money. This music has been crafted to go along perfectly with the film.
As the film is based on real events and has a realistic plot, the director has chosen not to use any Bollywood tropes and over the top clichés for this film. As seen in the near past, filmgoers are enjoying this type of cinema and this will definitely work in favour of the film.
Ajay Devgn is considered one of the best actors in the dramatic genre and just like his previous films, here too he has been handed some powerful dialogues which he has delivered with perfection. A tight script and a gripping plot guarantees good dramatic elements to the film.
