Praktan revolves around Ujaan Mukherjee (Prosenjit Chatterjee) and Sudipa (Rituparna Sengupta) who were once married but the relationship didn’t work. After a long time, they come across each other during a train journey. The film opens with people boarding a first class A.C. compartment of Jnaneshwari Express which will start from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Kurla in Mumbai, and reach Howrah rail station.
Sudipa boards the train where she has to share her coupe with Malini aka Molly (Aparajita Adhya) and her young daughter Putul. Among the other boarders, there is a newly wedded couple Ajay (Biswanath Basu) and his wife (Manali Dey), an elderly couple ( played by Soumitra Chatterjee and (Sabitri Chatterjee), who are off to Kolkata as their son’s family is departing to the U.S and a group of 4 musicians (popular musicians in real life – Anupam Roy, Anindya Chatterjee, Upal Sengupta and Surojit Chatterjee.
Sudipa realizes theat her co-passengers Malini and Putul are none other than Ujaan’s present wife and daughter. Soon, she realizes that she has not forgotten her days with Ujaan and starts reminiscing about those days. Sudipa, an architect from Mumbai, falls in love with Ujaan, an explorer, who conducted walks in all over Kolkata as a tourist guide. Life after marriage wasn’t a cakewalk for the young couple leading to their eventual separation. While Sudipta is going through the memory lane, Ujaan boards the train in Nagpur to surprise Moly. He is surprised to find Sudipa in the same coupe with his family.
