Pariyerum Perumal Review: Mari Selvaraj Has Written Himself Into The History Books

The underprivileged

Pariyerum Perumal is a gut-wrenching film about the caste creed in the interior Southern Tamil Nadu and tells the tale of the eponymous character and his dream to become a lawyer and stand for the people of his village. With the backup of Pa. Ranjith and his production house, Neelam Productions, Mari Selvaraj painted the celluloid with powerful images. Moving. Quite moving.

The film starts with disturbing scenes of an upper caste man pissing in the water of lower caste persons who are taking a bath. It is just to keep them where they should be. The film also has a powerful symbolism in the form of a dog. The animal is known for its loyalty. But is also used as a derogatory term to insult a person. A dog dies in the film and is given a proper funeral by the underprivileged group.

The story of a dream

It is from this group that Pariyerum Perumal dares to become a lawyer. He doesn't know English. Kathir interpreted the character in such a realistic manner that you will feel that you are the one who is suffering on the screen. He has given his best as a Dalit boy with dreams. He befriends Jothi or Jo, a girl from the upper echelons of the society. Like a kindhearted girl she is, she helps Pariyerum Perumal with the subjects and a little friendship develops between them.

The reality check

But things don't go the same for long, do they? Jo's friendship with Pariyerum Perumal irks her people and they do everything to trouble the guy because he's from the backward caste. How the guy prevails and gets his dream of becoming Pariyerum Perumal B. A., B. L. fulfilled form the rest of the story.

The movie has many disturbing images. Some scenes are nauseating to the weak hearts like the scene where after beating a lower caste man black and blue, the aggressor pisses on him. The killer hired by the upper caste persons declares proudly that the murders that he commits for caste as kula saamikku seiyyara sevai. There are passing references to real life honor killings like Kausalya Shankar.

Pariyerum Perumal is about optimism

Even with all this, the most surprising aspect of Pariyerum Perumal is the underlying optimism in the narration and the idealism of the protagonist. There are some whistle podu level scenes like the college principal motivating Pariyerum Perumal. The dialogues and the expressions given by both the actors are simply superb. There are other emotionally charged by heartwarming scenes like those between the protagonist and his mother.

The lesser fortunate

But for a director who presents the case for the underprivileged, it is sad to see the heroine character is sketched as the stereotypical caricature. The ending is powerful but should have been presented in a more sensible manner. Other than this, Pariyerum Perumal is an essential film that takes Tamil Cinema forward.

The rest

Yogi Babu as the hero's friend is excellent as always. This is the second time in two months that he stole the show in a film. Marimuthu as Jo's father is brilliant. Lijeesh as her cousin packs a punch in the screen time he is given. But it is Kathir who is a revelation. He came of age with Pariyerum Perumal. His career will now be defined as before and after.

Santhosh Narayanan gives his heart and soul for a Pa. Ranjith film. And he ably supported Mari Selvaraj's direction and narration with his music. The sounds take us into the world of Pariyerum Perumal right from the word go. The cinematography is powerful and the visuals make for an immediate impact.

Into the history books

Pariyerum Perumal is a film that will be talked about for a long time. It is a film with a mission and the mission is fulfilled with aplomb by the director-producer duo of Mari Selvaraj and Pa. Ranjith.

Pariyerum Perumal Preview

What is Pariyarum Perumal about?

Pariyerum Perumal is a story about class struggle and a struggle for education. As is the case with most films associated with director Pa. Ranjith, Pariyerum Perumal talks about the cast discrimination in the South of Tamil Nadu towns. It's the story of a boy named Pariyerum Perumal who promises on his mother to an old man that he will become a lawyer and stand for the people of his village. Interspersed with this is a budding love story of Jo and Pariyerum Perumal would-be B. A., B. L.

Pa. Ranjith who goes by the handle of @beemji in Twitter is a politically active filmmaker. After treading the star vehicles of films like Kabali and Kaala, he's back to his roots of being a simple storyteller about the underdogs who are looked down upon by the higher caste people. Before going to take his Bollywood debut into his hands, Ranjith comes up with his maiden production venture, Pariyerum Perumal, in the direction of Maari Selvaraj, the former assistant of director Ram. His production house is named Neelam Productions.

What to expect from Pariyerum Perumal?

An intense realistic story about discrimination

As we have already talked about, Pariyerum Perumal is the story of the eponymous character and his plight to get an education in the class discriminated inner Tamil Nadu. It is his life, his friends that include his dog (a big symbol for an underdog), his people, and his love. For the girl named Jo.

From the trailer, it can be evidenced that the narration is approached in a realistic and rusty manner. The story is told with intense grit and guts. Pa. Ranjith's brand of filmmaking is written all over the trailer. So, we can expect Pariyerum Perumal asks uncomfortable questions that are at once needed to be asked and essential.

The lead actors

Kathir seemed to have gone into the skin of the character Pariyerum Perumal, a boy from the lower rungs of the society with an ambition to stand for his people. Aanandhi played the role of a dream girl for the guys like him. Probably from the upper echelons of the rural society. Yogi Babu and the rest of the characters are aptly cast by the makers. So, on the acting front, there's nothing to worry about.

Music and cinematography

The most striking aspect of Pariyerum Perumal is the rustic cinematography which is at once atmospheric and realistic. It created the right mood for a film like this. The uncomfortable feeling under the narration is aptly caught by the cinematographer Sridhar. What can we say about Santhosh Narayanan's music? He always keeps his best for Pa. Ranjith. Despite the director being a newer person, Santhosh Narayanan is at his best while giving the background score.
