Pariyerum Perumal is based on the age-old problem of caste discrimination with a commentary on honor killings whose root is based in the caste superiority and inferiority. Pariyerum Perumal, a youngster from the lower rungs of the society, is grief-stricken when his dog, Karuppi, is killed by some upper caste men. As young as he is, he has seen the reality of life. He is inspired by Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and wants to become a lawyer so that he can help his people.
Pariyan, as he is known, dares to dream, but he is lacking in the skill that is needed in a society where a person's level is measured by his ability in speaking a foreign language. In the college, he joins a college in Tirunelveli, he feels embarrassed as he is not proficient in English. Jothi Mahalakshmi aka Jo comes to his aid. She is from the town of Ambasamudram, an upper caste girl.
Slowly, it appears that Jo has fallen in love with Pariyan. This irks her cousin Sankaralingam. Things go to the South when Jo invites (innocently) Pariyan to a wedding reception in her extended family. In the meantime, Sankaralingam vows to teach a lesson to Pariyan. How Pariyan fulfills his dream of becoming a doctor like Ambedkar despite all the troubles caused by his upper caste rivals and stand for his people form the rest of the story.
Pariyerum Perumal received an overwhelmingly positive response from the critics. The movie was praised for his subtle but hard-hitting message, and idealism and optimistic undertones. The director Mari Selvaraj's work was singled out for its quality. The performances of Kathir in the title role and Yogi Babu, and Marimuthu were positively commented upon. Periyerum Perumal turned out to be a commercial success.
