‘Padmaavat’ is another period costume drama from producer-director Sanjay Leela Bhansali which stars Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in the lead roles. The film tells the story of Rani Padmini (Deepika Padukone) who was mentioned in the epic poem Padmaavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. She is the wife of Rawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor). Legend says that Allaudin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) attacked the Chittor Fort to capture Rani Padmini, this forms the crux of the story. The film began shooting in July 2016 and this is the third collaboration between Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Deepika Padukone, and Ranveer Singh. The film is set to release on January 25th, 2018 in 2D and 3D formats.

Since the announcement of the movie, Padmaavat became controversial. A Rajput caste organization, Shri Rajput Karni Sena made allegations that the film depicts factual inaccuracies and is portraying the Rajput queen Padmavati badly. Activists from the Karni Sena group vandalized the movie sets and made threats of violence on the theatres releasing the movie. Later the Karni Sena group made death threats against the cast and crew of the movie putting a bounty of 5 crores on their heads. Because of these controversies, the movie name was changed from 'Padmavati'to 'Padmavat'.
