October Review & Rating
October is the latest directorial venture of the National Award winning director Shoojit Sircar who has directed films like Vicky Donor and Piku. Written by Juhi Chaturvedi, the film stars Varun Kapoor and marks the Bollywood debut of Banita Sandhu. The film tells the story of a 21 year old management student named Dan (Varun Kapoor), who works at a hotel at the night shift, which is a part of his training. He is tired of his monotonous life which revolves around his studies, work and friends but has no other option than to go through it.
Things then take a turn when one of Dan’s colleagues, Shiuli (Banita Sandhu) gets into an accident which hurts her badly and she is sent to the hospital. She is paralyzed and fighting for her life, and even though they hadn’t spoken much before, she calls out his name. This makes Dan visit her at the hospital where he forms a connection with her, visiting her every day and staying there for hours together. His life is completely changed and the journey of Dan following up with Shiuli’s recovery forms the rest of the movie.
Varun gets into the character of Dan completely and his character and the audience will connect to his character the most. Varun leaves all of the Bollywood-Hero stereotypes behind and plays a simple everyday guy in this film, and he excels at doing so. Banita Sandhu makes an interesting and impressive Hindi film debut and gives a good performance. One of the best actors in the film is Gitanjali Rao, who plays the role of Shiuli’s mother who is broken by her daughters condition.
Despite the sad overall plot of the film. Director Shoojit Sircar and writer Juhi Chaturvedi are successful in inducing humor in certain scenes and the scenes between Varun’s character and the character of the hospital nurse are hilarious. They also stay away from the melodrama that is often seen in films like these and keep things natural. Cinematography by Avik Mukhopadhyay is stunning and captures the beautiful scenery perfectly which goes well with the feel of the film.
But the good performances and high technical accuracy are not all that a film needs. The pacing of the film is very slow and there is little to no entertainment value in it and might not be liked by the masses, who expect to see Varun in his usual avatar. Editor Chandrashekhar Prajapati could have done a better job at keeping the film tight and shorter. Shantanu Moitra has composed the music and the response to it is widely positive, and it goes well with the story of the film.
Verdict: October is a slow, yet interesting film. This Shoojit Sircar directorial starring Varun Dhawan is worth a watch.
