NTR: Kathanayakudu depicts the life and times of legendary Telugu actor and game-changing political leader Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao starting from his early non-filmy career to the point of time when he announces his entry into active politics and Telugu Desam party. The movie is told from the perspective of N. T. R.'s wife Basava Tarakam who recollects her life memories with her husband when she was taking cancer treatment.
N. T. R. started out as a small scale employee in a registrar office near Mangalagiri. Not just satisfied with the job and fed up with the corruption he leaves his job to become an actor. He goes to Madras (now Chennai) and meets the renowned filmmaker L. V. Prasad who had previously given him a recommendation letter.
After playing a supporting role in Mana Desam directed prasad himself starring the first superstar of South India, Chittoor Nagaiah, NTR slowly gets good opportunities and attains stardom with films like Pathala Bhairavi and Mayabazar. He especially comes to be known synonymously with Lord Krishna.
Meanwhile, he maintains a healthy professional rivalry and a strong bond of friendship with another star hero of the period, Akkineni Nageswara Rao. But the human being in him doesn't let him settle with just his success. He thinks about the world around him. The film then depicts his rise to godly status among the masses and the necessary motivation behind his entry into politics.
NTR: Kathanayakudu received unanimous positive response from the critics who praised the performance of Balakrishna as solid and he was a perfect fit in the second half of the film. Vidya Balan as Basava Tarakam also received positive reviews for her work. Sumanth was also singled out for praise for his role as Akkineni. The direction and the scale of the film also received considerable acclaim. But the movie has a disappointing performance at the box office and is termed as a cost failure by the box office pundits.
