NOTA is a political thriller directed by Anand Shankar. The story is about Varun (Vijay Deverakonda), son of Vinothan (Nassar), Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Varun is an avid gamer who is carefree and clueless about politics.
On the night of his birthday, cops chase him to inform that he has been called by his father for an emergency meeting. Vinothan is being prosecuted for an illegal assets case in the court. He steps down from his post and announces that the party has decided to appoint Varun as the interim Chief Minister. Varun continues to act recklessly even after taking the oath. Then, Varun's father gets arrested and riots break out in the city. Rest of the story is about how this disinterested young man transforms and holds his ground amidst the power game of politics.
Vijay Deverakonda, Nassar and Sathyaraj's noteworthy performances have been appreciated. But, the film received a mixed response as it couldn't capitalize on the political narrative which was its strength.
