Njan Marykutty Review & Rating|
Njan Marykuttty which marks the fifth association of Jayasurya-Ranjith actor-director duo after their highly successful ventures like Punyalan Agarbathis, Su Su Sudhi Vathmeekam, Pretham, and Punyalan Private Limited, is one of the highly anticipated Malayalam releases of the year. The film which in many ways a breath of freshness in Malayalam cinema revolves around Marykutty, a lively and ambitious transwoman who is determined to follow her heart. Apart from Jayasurya, actors like Suraj Venjaramoodu, Innocent, Joju George and Jewel Mary are part of this film bankrolled by Ranjith Sanker and distributed by Ranjith Sankar-Jayasurya duo's Punyalan Cinemas. Mathukutty, from a very young age, is caught in the clash between his tangible masculine body and palpable woman psyche and the chaos and humiliations it inflicts. Finally, after quitting a job in an IT company, Mathukutty decides to take a plunge and become Marykutty through sex change surgery. But it is a lot of emotional trauma and other obstacles that Marykutty has to go through in order to live the life she aspires with dignity and respect in a society that is less inclusive and increasingly phobic.
Undeniably, Njan Marykutty has Jayasurya's best performance till date. It is with such grace and brilliance the actor has pulled off his character Mathukutty/Marykutty. It is not an easy task for any actor to step into the shoes of a woman and render countenance and mannerisms without making a mess of it all. In Njan Marykutty, Jayasurya successfully disguises himself; all we see is Marykutty. Jayasurya is backed by the impeccable performance of actors such as Suraj Venjaramoodu, Jewel Mary, and Aju Varghese. Joju George's performance in his police role is nothing short of brilliance.
Ranjith Sanker's Marykutty is much like any other 21-century woman; educated, independent, ambitious and at the same time in a constant struggle with societal norms. The director deserves a pat on his back for sketching his protagonist in a very realistic light and not giving in to the cliches associated with a such a character, not even once in the entire film. Njan Marykutty introduces us through the humiliations and challenges a transperson has to go through on a daily basis in the present society. It also throws light on the trauma of their families.
Like Ranjith Sanker movies Njan Marykutty also has inspirational dialogues and 'sheroism' aplenty. A few scenes look a tad too unrealistic. But never even once the film appears to be a half-hearted attempt. Songs by Anand Madhusudanan and cinematography by Vishnu Narayan are pleasing and makes it a warm and gripping tale that would stay with the viewer for a while, if not forever.
Final Verdict: Njan Marykutty, in the end, it is the kind of film that really touches your heart and nudges it to be a better and more empathetic. Grab your tickets right away!

What Is Njan Marykutty About?
Njan Marykutty, starring popular actor Jayasurya in the eponymous role of Marykutty, is a light and engaging tale of a spirited transwoman who don't let the society to decide her life. An ambitious and resolute woman who is trapped inside the body of a man, Marykutty sets out to realize her dreams one by one and in her endeavor meets some kind humans who become her support system. Ranjith Sanker who is known for films like Punyalan Agarbathis and Ramte Edanthottam has helmed Njan Markutty. Apart from Jayasurya, Innocent, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Joju George, Sidhartha Siva, and Jewel Mary are also part of the cast.
What To Expect From Njan Marykutty?
Ranjith Sankar who has scripted and directed Njan Marykutty has revealed that he has stalled and abandoned this one film several times owing to the complexity of its subject matter. The film is indisputably the first Malayalam film to have a transwoman as the central protagonist. Moreover, it is also the first ever Malayalam film to treat the transwomen, or any gender minority for that matter, with the sensitivity and dignity they deserve.
If his last film Ramante Edenthottam has the traces of walking away from the traditional notions associated with family and patriarchy and slightly challenges the popular notions of morality, Njan Marykutty suggest the confrontation of the stigma associated with the transgenders and transsexuals. The attempt is indeed a laudable one. The trailer and the other videos that have been released so far has fetched immense positive response from all walks of the audience and the film is likely too.
The major highlight of the film is Jayasurya. It is apparent the actor has nailed his role to the core and the sensitivity and charm with which he walks around in the shoes of Marykutty is more than amazing. Njan Marykutty is the fifth film from the Ranjith Sanker and Jayasurya duo whose earlier collaboration were all big success. Njan Marykutty is very much likely to be in that list and if it is, it would be Jayasurya's film as much it is a Ranjith Sanker movie.
For a long time, the gender minorities have only been merely a prop for humor in Malayalam movies and we earnestly hope Njan Marykutty would undo the aversion that has been added to the existing stigma through such poor and insensitive portrayals in the mainstream cinema. Watch out for the stunning performance from Jayasurya, the wonderman of Malayalam cinema.
