Neerja is a biographical thriller drama that takes us through the events that took place during a plane hijack on which Neerja Bhanot was the head purser. Neerja Bhanot was one of the 55 most beautiful Indian women on Earth. The movie opens with Neerja arriving late for a house party. Later that evening, Rama says Neerja to return back to her modeling career. But Neerja insists on working as a head purser.

As Neerja boards Pan Am 73, it is revealed that Abu Nidal organization, a Libyan-sponsored Palestinian terrorist group is planning to hijack the plane in Karachi. Four Abu Nidal terrorists in the form of security guards board the plane and hijack it. Neerja gives this news to pilots and pilots escape.

An Indian American passenger reveals that he is American and he is shot dead. The terrorists want a radio engineer and when one of the radio engineers, Ali stands up, Neerja signals him to sit down. When terrorists tell the flight attendants to collect passports to identify Americans, Neerja and her colleagues, either hide the American passports under their seats or throw them. Unable to trace an American, hijackers hold a Britisher as a hostage.

The Pakistani negotiators trace the radio engineer, Ali. When a younger terrorist is stopped from molesting flight attendants, he agitatedly shoots Ali. With this, hijackers become more agitated. After 17 hours, the plane loses its auxiliary power and lights inside get switched off. Terrorists start shooting passengers. A brave Neerja opens the rear door and deploys the chute, letting the passengers out of the plane.

When Neerja tries to shield a child from gunfire, she is fatally shot by the terrorists. Neerja saved 359 lives. The film closes with Neerja who was honored posthumously with the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest military decoration awarded for peace and self-sacrifice.

Neerja opened to positive critical reception and became one of the highest-grossing Indian films with a female protagonist. The movie bagged two National awards under the categories of Best Feature Film in Hindi and Special Mention for Sonam apart from 35 other awards.
