Director: Virinchi Varma
2016 was an eventful year for Nani who made a strong comeback with 2 hits in the first half with Krishna Gadi Veera Prema Gadha and Gentleman. His third release of the year was Majnu which was directed by Virinchi Varma of Uyyala Jampala fame. Majnu is a love-hate-love story of Aditya and Kiranmayi.
The story of Majnu begins with the introduction of Aditya who is an assistant director of SS Rajamouli. One fine day he meets Suma and after winning a challenge he asks her to meet him. After Suma insisting him so much, Aditya begins to tell his love story to Suma which shifts the film to his native place Bhimavaram. Aditya, after finishing his education gets placed in Infosys as a software engineer. A happy Aditya gives a party to his friends and on their way back, Kiranmayi hits Aditya with her bike accidentally. Kiran, her sister, and Aditya’s friends take him to the hospital where Aditya confesses his love to Kiranmayi who leaves the hospital without a trace.
Another day, Aditya finds her on her way to college and follows her to the college which incidentally happens to be the college which he studied. In order to impress Kiran, Aditya joins the college as a junior lecturer. After multiple stints and meetings, Aditya writes a heartfelt letter to Kiran and proposes to her. Kiranmayi accepts his proposal and when everything seems well, Aditya’s priorities like his friends start to irritate Kiranmayi which eventually leads to their breakup. In this process, Suma also gets impressed with that letter and falls for Aditya. But Aditya realises that he is still in love with Kiranmayi. How he convinces Kiranmayi and Suma forms the rest of the story.
Majnu opened to mostly positive reviews but the lack of comedy or other commercial elements, Majnu couldn’t make it big at the box office. The movie registered low collections because of heavy rains in the Telugu states and ended up as an above average film in Nani’s career. Majnu songs and background score were appreciated by the critics apart from the performances of Nani and Anu Emmanuel.
