Monsoon Shootout Review & Rating
‘Monsoon Shootout’ stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing a ruthless murderer and Vijay Varma playing a rookie police inspector in the lead roles. The film tells the story of how this rookie cop comes across the murderer Shiva and has to decide whether to kill him or not. This moment is one of the most pivotal parts of the film and it is from here, that the story goes two different ways. One story takes place after the cop kills Shiva, and the other story takes place after Shiva runs away from the cop. The film also has Sreejita De, Tannishtha Chatterjee and Farhan Mohammad Hanif Shaikh in supporting roles and is produced by Anurag Kashyap. The film was made four years ago but had failed to get any distributors, and is finally releasing after the success of Nawazuddin Siddiqui as an actor.
Nawazzudin Siddiqui plays the role of a serial killer, a role he has previously played in Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’. In this film, his character is named Shiva and uses an axe as a weapon. The actor tries to give his best performance but his character is not established enough to form a connection with the audience. Vijay Varma plays a rookie cop who will do anything to stay out of a desk job and lands himself in a shootout where he confronts Shiva. Vijay’s performance is top notch but unfortunately, the script lets him down as well as there is no depth to his character. Another fascinating performance is that by child artist Farhan Mohammad Hanif Shaikh who plays the role of a young kid who is seeking revenge for the death of his father. Supporting actors like Sreejita De and Neeraj Kabi have almost nothing to do in this thriller.
Newcomer Amit Kumar directs the film after directing the critically acclaimed short filmed ‘The Bypass’ which starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Irrfan Khan. He uses his unique writing techniques and cinematographer Rajeev Rai’s style to get the audience away from the story. The film can be appreciated on a technical basis but when it comes to the story, it fails. The same story has been told a thousand time in Hindi cinema and nothing new is offered to the audience. Another aspect where the film fails is its editing. The scenes that are supposed to cut quickly between each other go on for way too long and get boring while doing so. The music of the film is minimal and it has two songs, filmed on Tannishtha Chatterjee, who plays Nawazuddin’s wife in the film.
Verdict: 'Monsoon Shootout' had garnered a lot of expectations from the audience since the first trailer released but it fails to meet these expectations. The concept of the film has potential but the script is very weak. The film offers nothing new and fans of Nawazuddin might enjoy it. For others, this film can be missed.
