Merku Thodarchi Malai Review: A spellbinding experience that will be talked for years

Merku Thodarchi Malai directed by Lenin Bharathi is an offbeat but an awesome visual treat. Written by Leni Bharathi, Merku Thodarchi Malai has every element to reach the audience added to it.
This Vijay Sethupathi Productions movie tries to essay the life of people living in small settlements of Western Ghats and the director has conveyed it through the lead character Rangasamy. Rangasamy's dream to own a land and earn money by farming and the journey to achieve his goal is the crux of Merku Thodarchi Malai.

Director through actor Antony who essayed the lead character Rangasamy has taken the audience to the living condition of people living on the foothills of the Western Ghat. The brilliant writer in Lenin Bharathi captures the audience' attention and make them travel with Rangasamy. Rangasamy's main earning is from the daily wage job he does. He picks up cardamom loads from the hills and brings it down.

The first half of the movie really indulges the audience in its spellbinding frames composed by Theni Easwar and the adventure and risk behind the beautiful foothills are amazingly captured by the cinematographer. The movie moves at a slow pace but it helps the movie feel like everything is natural and realistic. Ilaiyaraja's music plays a pivotal role in capturing the emotions of life in Merku Thodarchi Malai and it isn't just life of people but nature. The music really is travelling with the story and Rangasamy's life especially in the second half.

Rangasamy's travel to the uphills introduces many interesting characters and their ways of leading the life. During its course Rangasamy gets married and his dream of having his own land sees a dim. Time passes and he sticks more to his daily routines and his family. But a critical situation leads him to participate in a revolt and things turn upside down.

Director Lenin Bharathi ends the movie with a note that even development can be a greater cause of the destruction of the way of living and a community. Merku Thodarchi Malai is definitely real to reel life adaptation of many communities that are hidden in the country fearing the loss of its own identity.
