Judgementall Hai Kya Review: Lead Actors Make Sure To Keep You Engaged

The premise

There is something about Kangana Ranaut and characters that experience(d) trauma. Right from the beginning of her career, she received characters with several complexities and mental agony and now, if she is given such a character, she literally just blows it off like child’s play. What an actor she is! And how easily she can get into the skin of the characters she plays.

After delivering an inspiring performance as the Rani of Jhansi, Kangana Ranaut is back to her favourite playground. That of a mentally complex character and boy! She nailed the quirky role of Bobby! Opposite her is another bundle of talent, Rajkummar Rao.

Prakash Kovelamudi, the talented Tollywood director is known for coming up with concept based films or treading into unchartered waters. On his Bollywood debut, the filmmaker has chosen a quirky black comedy thriller, a genre which is rarely touched upon by our filmmakers. Kanika Dhillon’s story has tried to fill the void.

It's Bobby's World

Bobby is a quirky young girl who has her issues in life. In fact, she had faced a lot even in her childhood. The traumatic experiences she had as a kid lands her in an asylum and currently she is out only on the condition that she takes proper treatment from time to time. Like any girl generally good looking and of age, she has a boyfriend who is always kept at hello by her.

Professionally, she’s a dubbing artist. She lends her Boyce to heroine characters and why not? Bobby has one obsession. She goes right into the character she voices so much so that she imagines herself as the character itself. She also cosplays with those characters. We get to see several photographs of Bobby in the getups with quirky expressions.

On the other end of the spectrum is Keshav who is leading a normal life and is madly in love with his wife. Or everyone thinks so. Bobby develops a fascination for the couple. She observes them. But a sudden tragedy turns things upside down and Keshav’s troubles with Bobby just starts. Bobby suspects him of a murder and he has his own way of dealing with her. Two maddeningly whimsical personalities clash.

Is Keshav the murderer like Bobby maintains or is it just her imagination. Is Keshav a true gentleman or has his own dark underbelly? What is the result of their clash? Who is really behind the murder and how the feud of Bobby and Keshav ends? What’s the role of Bobby’s tame boyfriend in all this? The answers to all these questions form the rest of the story.

Writing and direction

Mental Hai Kya might be a weirdly good title for this film, but the protests really helped this film getting the more apt title. Judgementall Hai Kya. The writing of the film is as quirky as the lead characters and it appears that Kanika Dhillon has gone into the shoes of her characters. She even might have ironed out the minutest details about how the characters she had created act. Such was the thoroughness that has gone into unravelling of Bobby and Keshav!

The narration is edgy and the screenplay is top-notch in the first half. But considering the lofty expectations we have by the end of the first half, the second half may appear a bit flat. The climax also seem rushed as the twists were not given a satisfactory conclusion. The suspense element is maintained well though. The direction by Prakash Kovelamudi is competent.

Kangana is a treat to watch

Kangana Ranaut as Bobby is a treat to watch. Give her gadgets and add a bit more physical action, she could well be India’s answer to Lisbeth Salander (of The Millennium Trilogy). She’s original and the actress is inch perfect in her execution. Rajkummar Rao is a perfect match for her scene to scene and expression to expression.

Though by the design of the story his character is secondary to that of Kangana’s, he has given his best to match her and even dominate her towards the climax of the film. Jimmy Shergill received a refreshingly different role and he played it with aplomb. Amyra Dastur is neat as Keshav’s beloved wife. Rest of the actors did justice to what is expected of them.

The crew

The musical score by Daniel B. George complements the narration of the film without gaining attention towards it. The songs are okayish. The cinematography by Pankaj Kumar is a revelation. He captured the changing mood (of quirkily comedic and a sort of depressed atmosphere) if the film. The complex layers of narration were brought to life in a proper way. The editing is sharp and the runtime is perfect. The production values by Balaji Motion Pictures are first rate.

Judgementall Hai Kya is not a perfect film but a perfectly acted film. The performances of the lead pair covered the narrative flaws and the intrigue factor which is maintained till the end worked in its favor. You can watch it for the weirdly beautiful narration and a social message expertly packaged into the narration without distracting the attention from the main characters.

  • Kangana Ranaut at her best
  • Rajkummar Rao
  • Kanika's writing
  • Black comedy works
  • Thrills

  • The second half could have been better
  • The climax is rushed

Pycker Rating: 2.75 out of 5
