Mehbooba Review & Rating|
Puri Jagannadh strikes back with vengeance was the theme for the movie Mehabooba. That he is making this film with his son as the hero and has been putting his heart into making it created hopes among his fans. And he himself produced the movie on Puri Jagannadh Touring Talkies is another factor of curiosity.
Akash Puri is joined by debutant Kannada beauty Neha Shetty. Sandeep Chowta joined hands with Puri Jagannadh after a few years. With a part of the movie set in India Pakistan War of 1971, and the story revolves around India and Pakistan as the protagonists are from different countries (India and Pakistan), Mehabooba created interest in the audience. Let's see if Puri Jagannadh is back to form and a score a success for his son and himself with Mehabooba review.
Roshan (played by Akash Puri) is a youngster who recently completed B. Tech. His real aim is to join the army. Afreenc(played by Neha Shetty) a Pakistani student comes to India for higher studies. As without the hero and heroines meeting love cannot blossom, they meet when Roshan saves her from goons. Roshan always thinks that there is an importance to the Himalayas in his life and go there. In the same train is Afreen.
After a bit of screen time, they meet and they understand that their love is not just confined to this birth. They have sudden flashes of memories of their past lives and now they get it that their's was a love story with a previous birth. What's in store for them, what was their love story during the 1971 India Pakistan War, and how and why they got separated and how they fulfill their love in the present life forms the crux of the story.
Love or hate his films and hit or flop or whatever might be the result Puri Jagannadh movies have a standout feature. They screenplay never lags. But in Mehabooba, that element missed. The story is fresh for this generation. The actors are even fresh. And he made a sincere attempt at telling a reincarnation story. But he missed the spark in the narration. Both love stories fail to make a mark on the hearts of the audience.
Akash sparkles as a lead man
Akash is terrific as a lead man. But he looks too young and naive for the character. But he never feels like a new actor. He has certain experience as a child artist and he enacted the younger version of a Puri Jagannadh hero in the past. His performance in Mehabboba is like a seasoned veteran. Right from the histrionics to the diction, he did a tremendous job. He said in the audio function that he is not introduced by his father, it is he who is introducing his father. When we watch Mehabooba, we get the same feeling. This leads us to the writing and the direction. Rest of the cast members have not much importance and they did their bits, but don't register with us for long.
Puri could have done a bit better
Puri Jagannadh who had previously created ultra-aggressive heroes had come up with a movie with a strong storyline and a screenplay without any distortions. But he failed to narrate it with coherence. Some of the scenes in the movie are outright silly, especially those involve the army. And the chemistry between the lead pair which is like the life for movies such as this is missing. But Puri who has come out of his comfort zone should be commended for his efforts to reinvent himself.
The music by Sandeep Chowta is good. Songs are done well. The background score is excellent. The best thing is the songs are interlaced in the narration. The cinematography by Vishnu Sharma is outstanding. The captured the locations very well, and the atmosphere he created is great. The editing should have been a bit sharp. At least 15 minutes of the movie can be trimmed. Art department did a decent job.
Production values by Puri Jagannadh Touring Talkies are fantastic. The visuals are grand. The settings in Pakistan and the War sequences are terrific. Puri Jagannadh poured his heart and soul into the making of Mehabboba. And that is visible in every frame of the movie.
You can watch Mehabooba once
Overall, Mehabboba is a proof for how a movie comes out when Puri Jagannadh puts his mind on the project. Unfortunately, The efforts paled a bit in comparison to the acting of Akash which can be a proud moment for the director as his son outshined him. But as a maker, he failed to deliver a knockout punch.
Puri did a fantastic job storywise. And the making as good as it gets, but the end result is not as effective as expected but it's not all that bad. The movie is intense and sincere, and easily a one time watchable. Give it a try this weekend. Without much expectations, you can enjoy a different experience.

What is Mehabooba about?
Mehabooba means someone very close to heart. Of course, the beloved. For director Puri Jagannadh, Mehabooba means the culmination of his life's work. Except for Temper, his previous hit goes back to 2012 movie Businessman with superstar Mahesh. Once a star director with Midas Touch, who turned the fate of Ravi Teja, Puri Jagannadh fell down the ladder of success in the 2010s. Now, he's coming back with a vengeance. Akash Puri debuted with Andhra Pori, no in the direction of his father. The movie bucked at the box office and Akash has gone back to square one. Now, Puri himself has taken the matter into his hands and the result is Mehabooba. Kannada model Neha Shetty joined Akash as the lead lady in this reincarnation love story. Reincarnation is not new to Telugu Cinema. The concept produced some of the most memorable films of all time. One among them became an all-time biggest grosser at one time, Maha Dheera. Now, the lucrative and interesting subject matter with one more highlight. Part of the film is set in the backdrop of Indo-Pak war. And a love story that spans India and Pakistan.
What to expect from Mehabooba?
Puri Jagannadh, Puri Jagannadh, Puri Jagannadh
He had created a genre of heroes. Aggression is the right word to describe his heroes. A Puri Jagannadh hero is one who doesn't fear anything, has a strong attitude, cares for his people, and can fight against anyone. Puri Jagannadh has scored multiple successes with such stories. Character driven stories are reintroduced to Tollywood by him. Now, he's in a streak of failures, and his heroes are not paying him well. He took all risks in his stride and joined hands with his son. Akash Puri who had previously acted in few films as a child artist, most notably Businessman, became a lead mab with Andhra Pori. The movie gave him an indifferent result. To give his son the coveted success, Puri is not only directing the movie, he has produced it on Puri Jagannadh Touring Talkies. Such was his desperation and such was his confidence on Mehabooba, he even rumoured to risk selling a house (confirmed by Puri Jagannadh himself) for this. Mehabooba will certainly show Puri in a different angle. As he had already said many times, A new Puri Jagannadh will surface with this movie. His trademark aggressive hero, powerful oneliners are sure to work big time. The promise of a pure love story by Puri Jagannadh is enough to raise the curiosity in the audience.
A time-tested and successful subject matter
The hero and heroine fall in love as is the case from time immemorial. The elders most probably stand against them. Or sometimes few other reasons. The lead pair dies in the struggle to reincarnate at a different time period and place to unite in the end. This is a successful twist in the story since Mooga Manasulu. But such stories are rare and far between in Telugu. The last we saw such a story was when S. S. Rajamouli, Ram Charan Maha Dheera. And add to that the India Pakistan War and an inter-country love story, Mehabooba is going to be a sure shot must watch.
Sandeep Chowtha music
The last time Sandeep Chowtha scored music for a Purijagannadh movie, the songs were such big hits that they still can be heard here and there still. From what we can see from the trailer, the background score will heighten the feel of the movie. Sandeep Chowtha music will add value to this action love story. And his combination with Puri Jagannadh is the gold standard for a musical hit.
