Maradona Review & Rating|
Tovino's Maradona, which marks the directorial debut of Vishnu Narayanan, is a Malayalam thriller drama presented by Dhanush's Mini Studio. The catchy title of the film, along with its intriguing trailer and a couple of other impressive videos, has done the job of grabbing the attention of the movie-goers. Th expectations are high as the film is Tovino's major release after his superhit movie Mayaanadhi. Here is what Maradona is all about.
Maradona, a young man who is injured in an accident, finds refuge in his cousin's flat in Bengaluru. His cousin and family soon leave for a vacation and the young Maradona who is struggling to get by himself gets locked in inside the flat for a week. As the film gradually unveils, this seemingly charming young man turns out to be a hardhearted criminal on the run. The rest of the film moves back and forth in time, sketching a vivid portrait of Maradona who is forced to rethink in his life and values.
Tovino as Maradona delivers a convincing performance in a role that he hasn't done before. Although one could feel that there are few minor similarities to his character in Mayaanadhi, Maradona comes in stunning dark shades. Newcomer Sharnya does an okay job in her debut outing in a character which is annoyingly innocent at times. The rest of the cast including Chemban Vinod Jose who appears as a politician's goon and Shalu Rahim who plays Maradona's partner back up Tovino with brilliant performances.
Vishnu Narayan's Maradona follows a formula which is very familiar to the audience. However, the debutant director has managed to helm the whole film in a way that doesn't tire out the audience. On the technical side, Maradona manages to score well with effective frames, striking music, and crisp edits. Although the climax offers nothing new or refreshing but an average viewer will leave the theatre hall with a sense of goodness and no serious complaint.
Final Verdict: Tovino steals the show in and as Maradona. A good one time watch!
