Premam is the story of a youngster named Vikram who searches for his soulmate in different phases of his life. Premam documents three distinct phases of love. One, an infatuation for Suma, the prettiest girl in his locality when he was 16 or so in 2000. The next one is a passionate love for his college lecturer Sithara. And the third one is well... a mature love story with Sindhu.
In the year 2000, Vicky falls in love with Suma. But he couldn't express his love for her. One day, he writes a letter to her and sends it via a little girl who hangs around Suma. Vikram's love fails when he comes to know that Suma is using him to get help to communicate with her lover. Moreover, Vikram is afraid of Suma's father who beats the bush out of the guys who bother his daughter.
Five years on, in 20015, Vikram grows to become the rugged youngster who beats those who comes in his way. He is suspended when he beats his rival gang lead by Arjun. When he comes back to the college after the suspension, he starts to rag juniors. On one such occasion, he comes across Sithara, a Maratha-Tamil lecturer who comes to teach in Vicky's college. She lets them go, but later punishes them when she finds out they were consuming alcohol in the class. Vikram begins to fall in love with Sithara.
Vikram's lecturer also develops feelings for Sithara. During this stage, Vikram's talent for cooking comes to the fore. Sithara couldn't help but fall for the sweet he made for her on the occasion of Gudi Padwa. When the college gives holidays, Sithara goes to her native place with her cousin Sanjay.
But tragedy strikes when she meets with an accident and forgets everything, especially the moments related to her love for Vicky. Vikram knowing this gets shattered. What happens later and if Vikram recovers from the shock, and finds his soulmate forms the rest of the story.
Premam received a generally positive response. Despite very negative comments and trolling before the movie was released, Shruti Haasan's performance was well received despite not being treated superior to Sai Pallavi's performance in the Malayalam original. Naga Chaitanya' performance was praised for its authenticity. Nagarjuna had a cameo as Vicky's father and Venkatesh reprises the role of DCP Ramachandra who is the maternal uncle of Vicky.
