Maharshi tells the story of an ambitious youngster who returns to India in search of his lost friend and in the process work for the betterment of the society, especially the farmers. Rishi is a highly intelligent youngster who comes up with an innovative idea of AI-based operating system. Pretty soon after starting out his career, he becomes the CEO of one of the biggest companies, Origin.
On an interview, he looks back at his life and how from humble origins he has become what he is with hard work and his ability. Of course, actions the result of ambition. A celebratory party is arranged by his friends and well-wishers there he notices the absence of his best friends - Ravi and Pooja.
When he enquires about them, he comes to know of a shocking truth about who really helped his growth. And also comes to know that Ravi's father died due to the sacrifice Ravi has done for the sake of Rishi. Rishi travels to India to meet Ravi. Currently, Ravi is a farmer and he fights an oil company whose pipelines the reason for the loss of fields for farmers. Rishi vows to fight on the side of his friend. He sets his office in the area but the man he has to fight is all the more sinister. How Rishi solves the issue and how his friendship with Ravi and Pooja evolves form the rest of the story.
Maharshi received mixed to positive reactions from the critics and the audience with the general consensus is that the superstar's silver jubilee film is a serviceable message oriented commercial film which showcases Mahesh in a different avatar. The performances of Mahesh and Allari Naresh who essayed the role of Ravi are praised by one and all and the movie went on to become the biggest hit in the career of Mahesh.
