Prabhavathi an independent documentary filmmaker stays with her friends. She decides to move in with her mother in law Gomatha learning that she is alone at the home. Prabha even during her busy schedules tries to find time in spending with Gomatha.

Two of them share a great rapport but Prabha learns that there's something that makes Gomatha feel sad and feel lonely in this new place. Gomatha is always fond of her good old days and tends to share the beautiful moments to Prabha. 

Prabha learns that Gomatha misses old besties and that is the reason she feels lonely most of the time. Prabha discusses it with her friends. With the help of them, Prabha decides to reunite Gomatha to her best buddies Subbu and Rani after 30 years. Determined to make her mother in law happy, she takes Gomatha to her best friends Rani and Subbu and three of them reunite after a long time. Prabha takes Gomatha, Rani and Subbu for a three days trip.

The movie revolves around the happy and funny moments the three friends share during the trip. Magalir Mattum is considered to be one of the finest women-centric feel-good movies released in Kollywood. The movie garnered wide appreciation and great collections at the Box Office.
