Maari 2 Story
Director: Balaji Mohan
Maari 2 chronicles the adventures and misadventures of our beloved cult character, the irritatingly loveable Maari. A few years have passed since we last met Maari and he’s is still doing what he does the best. Irritating and extorting money from the people. But he’s not as bad as some of the other dons. So is a likable rogue. We learn that several attempts are made on his life and he survives just like that.
It is the 100th such survival and its time for a celebration. The auto rickshaw driver Aanandhi whose sister was once saved by our Maari falls in love with him and she chases after him and he tries to avoid her. When coming from the celebration, Maari is attacked by Gangadhar Beeja whose brother was given a send-off by Maari in the previous film. Aanandhi takes Maari to the hospital and nurses him till he recovers. Maari too slowly warms up towards Aanandhi.
But Beeja who declares himself as the God of death himself for Maari doesn’t stop at anything to kill Maari. How Maari escapes from Beeja and establishes himself as the undisputed son of the area and how the police who are trying to end these petty gang wars nab the criminals form the rest of the story.
Maari generally received mixed reactions from the critics. The performances of the lead actors Dhanush, Tovino Thomas, and Sai Pallavi are praised but Maari’s softening in the second half was negatively commented upon. The movie went on to become an above average grosser at the box office fending off the competition from several other releases during the same week.
