Lipstick Under My Burkha is an Indian black comedy movie which tells the story of four different women who are living secret lives in search of a little freedom. Rosy is a fictional character from an erotic novel 'Lipstick Dreams', the story of her is narrated via by a 55-year-old widow, Usha Parmar, throughout the film. The story is set iin a small neighbourhood in Bhopal where four women Usha, Leela, Rehana, and Shireen lives.
Leela dreams to see the world with her lover Arshad who runs a small photo studio. Shireen secretly works as saleswomen but is always dominated by his sexually aggressive husband. Rehana is a college-going girl who has a different personality in college besides from her regular Burkha sewing life at her family store. How thing changes and gets complicated for these women and their lives intertwine forms the rest of the plot. The movie shows the constant urge to attain a little freedom.
Lipstick Under My Burkha garnered much controversy before getting a release date. Earlier, the censor board banned its release in India because of usage of explicit audio and video content. However, later the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal permitted to release the movie after 16 cuts. Afer release, the movie was critically acclaimed and garnered praises from not on Indian critics but also from the International platforms. Named as the 'must watch' film Lipstick Under My Burkha won many accolades nationally and internationally.
