Diya Review & Rating|
Diya, a psychological horror thriller essaying a very complex theme of abortion and motherhood is helmed by AL Vijay. The movie marking the debut of Sai Pallavi has Nirav Shah heading the cinematography with music scored by Sam CS. Diya has been packed with amazing talents like Nag Shourya, RJ Balaji, Stunt Silva performing prominent character roles. This Lyca Production venture is the 8th collaboration of AL Vijay and cinematographer Nirav Shah. Check below for the review.
AL Vijay's Diya revolves around the story of abortion and how the consequences affect the couple family. The horror element comes when the unborn child tries to kill the couple for being the reason and cause for her death. The movie starts with the soothing and peaceful ambience with happy romance sequence and bonding within the family of the characters played by Sai Pallavi and Nag Shourya. Slowly things would turn upside down with the couple's decision to abort and there starts AL Vijay's craft in bringing the horror lined to a theme which is socially very relevant. AL Vijay's previous movie Devi featured romance and comedy mixed with horror and with Diya, he makes things complex and it has hit right at the audience. With thrilling sequences, the director has mastered to get his message reach out the audience with fear and realization.
AL Vijay has lined the structure of Diya as a revenge thriller with a lot of emotions involved. The unborn child becomes the ghost and starts haunting the couple essayed by Sai Pallavi and Nag Shourya. The revenge on her own parents is the key element in Diya. Sai Pallavi, with just a few numbers of movies, has done an amazing job portraying a complex character in Diya. Her characterisation by AL Vijay is absolutely giving goosebumps. The dilemma created in her character's psychological state was brilliantly done with a lot of life by the Premam girl. She excelled both as the mother who regrets her lost child, and the wife who is frantically trying to save her husband. Where Nag Shaurya had nothing much to do with this horror thriller as Diya was completely travelling through the emotions of Sai Pallavi and the character Diya performed by Baby Veronica. Baby Veronica's performance as Diya is a proving that the director has a special talent in nurturing child actors to bring the best for him.
Nirav Shah is one of the top cinematographers in the country and the director's favourite companion has shown his brilliance again with his visuals. The frames composed by him has pitched perfectly with the Background music scored by the Vikram Vedha music director Sam CS.The CG works in the horror scenes, the minute shots, the tone and grading and the use of brilliant effects, Diya joins the list of movies packed with technical brilliance.
With all those good elements in the movie,director-writer AL Vijay misses out space the scenes with more elements to keep the audience engaged to fullest. Somewhere in the course of Diya, the screenplay loses its path from a revenge horror-thriller tone and moves it to the core of what the director wants from Diya. Having removed some cliches and added more thrilling elements Diya would have been a lifetime experience but AL Vijay has done justice to deliver a message which is much important and relevant to the society.
Final verdict: AL Vijay's Diya is a beautiful movie filled with emotions, complexities and elements of horror, that reaches out to give a good message.
