Kanne Kalaimaane tells the story of an upright, young bank officer and how her life changes when she is posted in a rural branch of the bank. Bharathi is a young Bank officer who is upright and straightforward. She is recently transferred to a village where Kamala Kannan lives.
Kannan is a well-educated youngster who returns to his village and helps establish organic farming. He is from an affluent family in the village, Solavandhan. Interestingly, He has a graduate degree in agriculture. As is the case with such heroes, Kannan is a do-gooder and mobilize the people around him to create employment on their own and stand up for themselves.
Kannan falls in love with Bharathi, smitten by her beauty inside and out. On another track, there are troublemakers in the rural area. Kannan at one point has to clash with them. Bharathi is also given trouble by those people. Kannan's family which is led by their grandmother stands united no matter what. But Kannan has to take a stand against the family's matriarch. Where all this leads to and how Kannan and Bharathi's lives affected by those around them and how they fight it off together form the rest of the story.
Kanne Kalaimaane received generally positive responses from the critics. The rural setting, the strong emphasis on morals and the performances of all the actors especially those of Tamannaah (who shed her usual glamorous avatar) and Vadivukkarasi are praised by the critics. The movie turned out to be a success at the box office. Director Seenu Ramasamy's direction received considerable acclaim.
