Kanaa tells the story of a young girl who decides to become a cricketer and bring the world cup to India in order to make her father happy. Kausalya lives in interior Tamil Nadu region with her family which includes her cricket-loving father Murugesan who is a farmer. Murugesan was seen weeping uncontrollably when Indian cricket team lost the world cup in 2007. Then and there Kausalya wants to play cricket and become an international cricketer and play big part in getting India World Cup.
Kausalya joins a local cricket team first which includes her classmates but comprises of boys. She Hons her skills as an off-spinner and develops a special technique and takes truck loads of wickets. But this earns the wrath of the villagers who perceives girls wearing shorts and pants/shorts. But her father supports her and she slowly gets notice of Tamil Nadu professional cricketers and gets into the women's team of the state.
On the other side of the spectrum is Murugesan's life as a farmer who loses money every years and gets debt-ridden. By the time Kausalya makes waves nation wide and is in the verge of being selected into the national team, he is on the verge of losing everything. How Kausalya fulfills her father's dream and also clears his debts form the rest of the story.
Kanaa received overwhelming positive response from the critics who praised the blending of an inspirational and empowering sports story with the travails of farmers and balancing both organically. Anuradha Kamaraj's direction and Sivakarthikeyan's taste as a producer are appreciated. Aishwarya Rajesh and Sathya Raj's performances are hailed as natural. The movie is a commercial success.
