Kalyanam Review & Rating
Salt Manjo Tree director Rajesh Nair latest directorial Kalyanam is a movie that manages to grab the attention of the industry for it marks the entry of veteran actor Mukesh’s son Shravan Mukesh to the cinema. Tagged to be a cliched love story by the makers, the movie stars Tamil actress Varsha Bollamma opposite to Sravan while they are backed a bevy of veteran actors like Sreenivasan, Mukesh, and Mala Parvathy among others like Hareesh Perumana and Gregory. Let's see what Kalyanam is all about.
The movie is about Sharath, a jobless young guy who is in love with his childhood friend Sharry, who also happens to be his neighbor. By the time Sharath manages to summon up all his courage and express his love to Sharry, her marriage gets fixed with another guy. And the crux of the Kalyanam, which claims itself to be a cliched love story, is who marries who in the end.
Sravan Mukesh who appears in the role of Sharath does look artless in his shabbily written character. His weak performance doubled with his musty and bland role falls short of anything impressive. Coming to the female lead, Varsha Bollamma signed up herself for a character that only involves dressing up, looking pretty and flaunting an innocent smile; and she does all the above-said things perfectly. It is apparent that the actress and her character is merely a prop that fuels this uninspiring romance drama. The performance of rest of the cast, including Mukesh's and Sreenivasan's, is out ruled by the insipidness of the film very easily.
Rajesh Nair successfully and brutally justifies the tagline of the movie -A Cliched Love Story- in all its possible meaning. He has chosen an easily predictable, cliche-ridden, and a very watery storyline and then goes about the business in a very unambitious manner, offering nothing to the audience. The love song and the song sung by Dulquer Salmaan and Gregory are sadly the only enjoyable elements in the movie.
Final Verdict: Kalyanam is an unintentional tribute to cliches that has gone haywire. Be cautious of the tagline before you book your tickets.

What to expect from Kalyanam?
A feel-good family entertainer
Kalyanam, if trailer of the movie is anything is to go by, is about two close families and a possible yet problematic marriage that might or might not happen. The movie features some of the Family audience's best-loved actors like Mukesh, Sreenivasan, Indrans, Dharmajan Bolgatty, Saiju Kurup and Sudheer Karamana who are capable of engaging performances. Apparently, one shouldn't be asking more reason to watch out for some amazing situational comedies, feel-good moments and lovable romance.
Two promising debuts
Kalyanam marks the entry of its lead actors Sravan Mukesh and Varsha Bollamma. Varsha Bollamma is a familiar face to some of the audience who have hearted her awesome Dubsmash videos. She has acted in a couple of Tamil movies and proved herself to be a bankable talent. It is would indeed be a treat for her fans to watch her in a Malayalam movie. Coming to Sravan, Mollywood is keenly looking forward to seeing his performance for the first time. And it is evident from the video songs and trailer, the young and budding actor has done a good job.
Music by Prakash Alex
The songs in Kalyanam are composed by Prakash Alex who is making his debut. The songs released on Youtube carries a decent number of views and shares. Najim Harshad and Sidharth Menon have delivered two beautiful songs for Kalyanam. The Drithangapulakitha song rendered by Dulqar Salman and Gregory is another major highlight of the movie. Melodious songs will hopefully be an added advantage for this romantic comedy.
