Arun Kumar Aravind's 'Kaattu' was one of the much-anticipated films for various reasons. For one thing, the movie is scripted by late filmmaker and writer P Padmarajan's son Ananthapadmanabhan based on the stories of Padmarajan, and all the leading characters of the movie were said to be inspired by the stories. For another, the movie seemed to have an interesting setting reminiscent of the Padmarajan movies. As 'Kaattu' finally opened on screens today, let's see if the movie has lived up to the expectations.

'Kaattu' opens in a pristine village in Kerala-Tamil Nadu border where Nuhukannu is brought by Chellappan to work in his fire-cracker unit. Things go well and smooth, till Nuhukannu become paranoid of certain things. Murali Gopi as Chellappan has delivered a stunning performance while Asif Ali has done his part as Nuhukannu fairly well. Varalaxmi, Manasa Radhakrishnan and Unni P Dev who handled the other roles convincingly enough.

One could say for sure 'Kaattu' is not definitely the best among Arun Kumar Aravind movies. While he is successful in depicting the rustic 70s on screen, the movie goes haywire when it comes to the drama.The cinematography and the sound department of 'Kaattu' have done an awesome job that one would stay hooked to the seat even when certain slow and unwarranted portions of the movie. The background score seems slightly jarring while the songs are all right and sync well with the situations.

Arun Kumar Aravind directorial 'Kaattu' starring Asif Ali, Murali Gopi, Varalaxmi and Manasa Radhakrishnan in the leadroles is drama set in the rustic terrains during the late 70s. The movie, written by Anantha Padmanabhan, is inspired by the stories of legendary director P Padmarajan.
