Irupathiyonnaam Noottaandu Review: A Could Have Been Better Film
Irupathiyonaam Noottaand is the sophomore film of Mohanlal's heir Pranav who made a successful debut with Aadhi last year. Joining hands with him is Arun Gopy who made a political thriller like Ramaleela. Both these newcomers are eager to prove that their first success is no fluke and they are here to stay. Teaming up with them is another relative newcomer, Zaya David.
Pranav's star vehicle
Touted as an action adventure, Irupathiyonaam Noottaandu aka 21st Century tells the story of a youngster who wants to come out of the shadows of his father could well be seen as the efforts of Pranav to come out of the giant shadows of his father, superstar Mohanlal like another superstar son, Dulquer Salmaan successfully did over the past few years. But again, unlike in the real-life for Pranav, the legacy in the movie is dubious. His on-screen father is a don who does his business in Goa and it is also where Pranav's Appu runs a water sports business in the beach.
Things get thicker when a Malayali girl comes into Appu's life. She is bold, uninhibited, and has a progressive outlook on life. Appu falls for her obviously and it stirs relatively still waters and all hell breaks loose. How and what happens to Appu and his tranquility and if he achieves his dream of coming out of his father's long shadow form the rest of the story.
The movie is clearly a Pranav's star vehicle. He did well within his limitations and needs to improve his diction. Performance wise he is adequate and the screen presence is ruggedly charming. With right roles and proper stories, he could come out of the shadow cast by his illustrious father in Malayalam Cinema. Zaya is terrific as the lead lady and was bold in her performance. Manoj K. Jayan as the father of the protagonist and the don is excellent. His presence in the movie itself is a booster for it. Rest of the actors including Kalabhavan Shajohn as Abusi, Dharmajan Bolgatty as Godwin, and Gokul Suresh make their presence felt.
Writing and direction
The story of the film touches upon several raging subjects, especially the societal problems faced by women, child abuse, and the divide between people based on place, religion, and beliefs and so many more. But the integrating thread is missing for the most part and these things just remain as lip service. The narration also lacks the punch of Arun Gopy's debut flick Ramaleela. Despite this, there are enough thrilling moments in the film to keep the audience invest in the proceedings till the end despite wearing a frown on the face thinking about what could have gone wrong with this film.
The music by Gopi Sunder is partly good. Songs don't make a big impact and the background score is good. But we get a feeling that the sounds are heard somewhere (in a few scenes). The cinematography by Abinandhan Ramanujam is inconsistent. The editing is a mixed bag. While the transitions from one scene to the other are done well, the scissor must have been used in some scenes well. The production values are good and the production design is refreshing.
Irupathiyonnaam Noottaandu is the case of a film where we think it could have been better. Pranav passes his test as an actor with distinction (doesn't mean 100%) and Zaya steals the show with her enchanting act. But the direction and the script play a bit of spoilsport. Don't get it wrong. It's not a bad film. But that doesn't mean it's a good film. You can watch it if you have no other time pass. Else, there's always a chance the film will be streamed online in near future.
- The scope of the story
- Zaya David
- Lack of depth in narration
- Inconsistent editing

What is Irupathiyonum Noottaandu About?
Pranav, the heir apparent of superstar Mohanlal had made his big screen debut last year with the action thriller Aadhi. Now, he is coming up with another thriller, this time with a romantic angle, Irupathiyonum Noottaandu. Arun Gopy who made his debut with the successful Ramaleela helms this project bankrolled by Tomichan Mulakuppadam on Mulakuppadam Films.
Pranav plays the role of a youngster who takes the trouble to distance himself from the smokey legacy of his father. There is a dialogue in the trailer to that extent that the time's up for his father and it is a new-age. Literally a new-age for Pranav who is doing his best to come out of the long shadow cast by his legendary father, superstar Mohanlal. Here in real life, the legacy is huge and it's a positive legacy to uphold.
Irupathiyonum Noottaandu Promises
A vibrant action adventure
Though the trailer of this film has an equal mix of violence and romance, the film appears to be vibrant with a lot of youthful energy that should be going to be the trademark of Pranav. While he was brutally trolled for his dialogue modulation in the trailer, he was similarly praised for his stunt sequences. The movie appears to be an action adventure with loads of stunts stylishly choreographed by none other than Peter Hein. The high octane chases will also form the part of big attractions for the film.
Arun Gopy direction
Arun Gopy made his debut with the widely acclaimed Ramaleela, a political thriller of the highest class. His direction was praised as slick and his deft handling of the subject won him applause from one and all. With Irupathiyonum Nottaandu, He is coming up with a more youthful subject and deals with a son's trails to come out of the shadow of his father's questionable legacy.
Team assembled by Mulakuppadam Films
Apart from the talented director in the form of Arun Gopy, the film has some well-known technicians in the crew. Top music director Gopi Sunder composes the musical score. Especially the background score is terrific in the trailer despite opening with a known bit. Shaji Kumar handles the cinematography and the visuals have an unusual youthful vibrancy. Zaya David plays the female lead and she looked to have good chemistry with Pranav. With all this, we can surely expect Irupathiyonum Noottaandu to be a movie to keep an eye this weekend.
