Hope Aur Hum Review & Rating
Hope Aur Hum is the directorial debut of ad filmmaker Sudip Bandyopadhyay which stars Naveen Kasturia, Naseeruddin Shah and Kabir Sajid in the lead roles. Naseeruddin plays the role of Nagesh Srivastava, an old man who runs his business with a very old copying machine. He shares an emotional bond with this machine but it fails at making proper copies, which angers his customers. His family urges him to get rid of the big and old machine which is taking up a lot of space but Nagesh refuses to do so. He believes that just like old machines can be replaced with new ones, old humans will also be replaced with the young ones and this fact scares him.
He lives with his son and daughter in law, and his grandkids, Tanu and Anu, played by Virti Vaghani and Kabir Sajid. These young kids are the only ones who support him and his copy machine. His son Neeraj (Aamir Bashir) works tirelessly and is hoping for a promotion that is long overdue. Nagesh’s daughter in law, Aditi (Sonali Kulkarni) is hoping that Nagesh gets rid of the old copier soon, which will free up a lot of space in the house.
One day, Nagesh’s other son Nitin (Naveen Kasturia) suddenly visits from Dubai without any notice, and as soon as he arrives, he loses his phone in the taxi. He later finds out that his phone has been found by a girl and starts talking to her a lot, and hopes that he has found love. Destiny plays a role in all of the characters’ lives in this film. Somewhere in Rajasthan, a family member of them is selling an old ancestral house and Anu goes to visit them. There he goes through a traumatic incident which changes his behavior completely. Here is where the tone of the shift completely changes from light-hearted and funny to being very emotional.
There are three different stories in this film that work very well on their own but somehow, do not go along with each other. The film has a lot of talented actors, from the experienced Naseeruddin Shah to the child actor Kabir Sajid, all of whom deliver some of the best performance of their careers. But the script fails them and there is a lot of tonal shifts in the film, which will confuse the watchers.
The direction too is haywire and it seems as if the Sudip Bandyopadhyay, who has also written the film, did not know for sure what he wanted with these characters. The music of the film is also very bland and does not suit the story very well. Cinematography by Ravi K Chandran is on point and he captures some of the locations beautifully.
Verdict: Hope Aur Hum is rich in acting performances but the story lacks the charm of a slice of life film.

What is Hope Aur Hum About?
Hope Aur Hum is a slice of life comedy drama starring Naseeruddin Shah, Sonali Kulkarni, Naveen Kasturia and Aamir Bashir and tells the story of three generations of family members who deal with their problems in their own and unique way. Directed by Sudip Bandyopadhyay and produced by his wife Samira Bandyopadhyay, this is a fairly sweet and simple tale of a family that latches on to hope even in the toughest of times and learns to let go of a few things dear to their heart along the way. It also gives out the message that a person must learn to face his troubles and own up to his mistakes on his own.
What to expect from Hope Aur Hum?
A heartwarming story
Hope Aur Hum is a family oriented simple film that gives the message of hope. In the present day Bollywood, such slice of films like Kapoor and Sons, Tumhari Sulu and Bareilly Ki Barfi surprised everyone by doing a great amount of business at the box-office and were appreciated by critics and audiences alike. The same can be expected from Hope Aur Hum as it is a happy tale revolving around a not so perfect family.
Naseeruddin Shah is considered one of the most talented actors working in Bollywood right now and has been receiving critical acclaim for his work for many years now. In this film, he is joined by various award-winning actors like Naveen Kasturia and Sonali Kulkarni, who will also try to prove their mettle as actors. It will definitely be interesting to see all of these performers on the screen together.
Unique Background Score
The director of this film, Sudip Bandyopadhyay and music director Rupert Fernandes wanted to do something unique and interesting with the film and hence, decided to compose the entire background score and song score on a single instrument that is the guitar. This has never been done before in an Indian film and hopefully, this experiment works in favor of the film.
