Guptodhoner Sondhane directed by a debutant Dhrubo Banerjee revolves around a treasure hunt. Subarna Sen AKA Sona Da (Abir Chatterjee), a professor of History at Oxford University returns to India. Sona Da along with Abir (Arjun Chakraborty), his nephew takes a trip to their ancestral home in the village of Manikantapur. Abir’s eccentric yet scholarly maternal uncle (Goutam Ghose) has recently passed away under mysterious circumstances. Sona Da and Abir come to know about a rural saying about a 350-year-old Mughal treasure hidden somewhere in the ancestral palace. Abir’s maternal uncle was the last in the line of the zamindar family and he has left a clue in his diary that would lead them to the treasure. The duo embarks upon a deadly quest for the hidden treasure along with Jhinuk, Abir's love interest.
The film's biggest plus point is its simplicity. The makers were aware and confident about their target audience and did no mistake to provide exactly what they would like to watch. The film gives a decent dose of comedy, most of which comes from the protagonist’s sidekick played by Arjun. One might get a Dan Brown-meets-Satyajit Ray vibe as Sona Da cracks the puzzle, however, the puzzles keep on shuffle from being downright silly to smart and interesting.
Anyway, Guptodhoner Sondhane has its set of setbacks. Towards the end, it gets oversimplified. Abir Chatterjee, who is by now has become the face of Bengali sleuth, is nothing different from his Byomkesh and Feluda avatar. Arjun, on the other hand, delivers a brilliant performance. His comic sense is almost impeccable utilizing what he steals the show in this treasure hunt saga.
