Gully Boy tells the story of a youngster from the slums and his rise in the world of rap music. Murad Ahmed lives with his mother and abusive father in Dharavi area. He is about to finish his studies and is fed up with his father's behavior. He couldn't take it more when his father, Aftab brings home his second wife. He vents out his anger in the form of lyrics and slowly gets introduced to the world of rap music.
Murad's sole source of happiness in his existence apart from his mother is Safeena. Safeena is getting trained as a surgeon and meets him in secret so as not to create trouble for both of them. Murad had to take the job of a chauffeur when his father gets injured. Around the same time, he meets a talented rapper who is making himself a name, Shrikant Bisht aka MC Sher.
In collaboration with Sher and his encouragement, he uploads a video on YouTube which is shot in their slum becomes viral and brings Murad and co attention from Berklee College student Sky. This leads to friction in his relationship with Safeena. And he comes out of his house with his mother when his father's abusive behavior escalates to unbearable proportions. How Murad overcome his problems inside and outside and turn out to be a success in his life form the rest of the story.
Gully Boy received very positive reviews from the critics and went on to become a commercial success. Ranveer Singh, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Alia Bhatt's performances received high acclaim from the critics. Zoya Akhtar's direction and the music are said to be the biggest highlights of the film. The movie went on to join 200 crore club (gross), a third consecutive film for Ranveer Singh.
