Gang Review & Rating|
Suriya’s Gang is one of the most awaited biggies of the year which has been in the news ever since it got announced by its maker KE Gnanavel Raja under Studio Green banner. Gang is the Telugu dubbed version of Tamil film Thaanaa Serndha Koottam which is a remake of Neeraj Pandey's Akshay Kumar starrer Special 26. Gang is directed by Vignesh Sivan and has music by Anirudh Ravichander also stars Keerthy Suresh, Karthik, Ramya Krishnan, Kalaiyarasan, Brahmanandam, Nandha, RJ Balaji, Senthil, Thambi Ramaiah, Anandaraj, Sathyan, Sivasankar and Suresh Chandra Menon.
The story of Gang is inspired from a real-life heist incidents that took place in Mumbai in 1987 where a group of men posing as CBI officials (experts in their own fields to pull-off any kind of heist with perfect planning, coordination and execution) raid rich and corrupt people including a jewellery showroom worth 35 lakhs. The real CBI steps in to catch this fake team red-handed. Whether they are successful in doing so or not forms the remaining part of this thrill-a-minute story.
Suriya’s towering performance holds the film together as he carries the whole film on his shoulders. With Vignesh tweaking the script of Special 26 to suit the taste of the audiences down south, one must say that he has done a good job of the screenplay though, the narration becomes predictable at times. The first half of the film is good and makes for an engaging narration with some edge of the seat moments. The songs act as speed breakers at times but are catchy nevertheless. The second half becomes a little intense as the main plot starts to drag with the sub-plots becoming a hindrance. Despite a few screenplay glitches post interval Gang still ends up as an enjoyable fare holding the viewer's attention.
Suriya as the main lead of the cast and fake CBI team walks away with all the accolades. With his recent films turning a turkey at the box-office Gang should be able to get him back in contention and provide him the much-needed hit. Keerthy Suresh doesn’t have much to do as the female lead as she is there only for a few scenes romancing Suriya and a couple of songs. It’s nice to see veteran Karthik back on screen playing the real senior CBI officer trying to catch Suriya and his team. Ramya Krishnan has got some great moments as she adds a lot of value and dignity to the role which wasn’t a part of the Hindi original. Brahmanandam has a small role and does what he is expected to do.
The production values are good while the technical department of Gang has done a rather decent job on the whole. The screenplay writing by Vignesh is quite good and has tweaked the narration wherever required. Dialogues by Shashank Vennalakanti are good too whereas the camera work by Dinesh is efficient. Srikar Prasad’s editing is good enough to keep audiences hooked till the end. The music scored by Anirudh Ravichander is okay while the background score could’ve been better.
Overall, Gang makes for a good watch with good performances by its lead and supporting cast and adept direction by Vignesh Sivan who does his job perfectly well. Despite a few passable glitches, Gang should be on your must-watch list this weekend.

Gang User Reviews
Being a die-hard Suriya fan and Akshay Kumar fan, I saw Gang to compare it with Special 26. Should say was surprised the way director Vignesh adapted it to suit the audiences down south but nevertheless it made for a good watch. Must say the Telugu dubbing was not bad at all. If you haven’t watched Special 26 you are bound to enjoy this one more. After a couple of no-shows at the box-office Gang should come as a sigh of relief for Suriya who carries the whole film on his shoulders. Ramya Krishnan too impressed as a member of Suriya’s team…welcome back Suriya!!!!

Despite being a dubbed version the audiences are giving it a thumbs up and calling it a clean entertainer which makes you sit glued to your seats until the very end. Though it is not a total rip off of Akshay Kumar’s Special 26, the director has tweaked the narration a bit to suit the audiences down south. The movie has all the ingredients to become a success and give actor Suriya the much-needed hit in Telugu as well as Tamil. Here are some public responses that have come in just now:
That’s all from us as far as public talk of Gang Telugu movie is concerned.
What is Gang about?
Over the years, Suriya has turned out to be one of the most favorite Tamil actors for the Telugu audience. While the movies of bigger Tamil stars like Vijay, Ajith and even Kamal Haasan struggle to release in the Telugu states, Suriya's Gang is releasing simultaneously with the Tamil version that too during Pongal season. This speaks about the craze Suriya has in the Telugu states. Gang also features Keerthy Suresh who is one of the most loved actresses by the Telugu youth and Ramya Krishnan who is a well-known actress in Tollywood. UV Creations banner is bringing Gang to the Telugu audience. Gang is directed by Vignesh Shivn whose film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan's Telugu version Nenu Rowdy Ne is quite popular with the Telugu movie lovers. With stellar cast, talented crew and aggressive promotions, Gang has grabbed the attention of Telugu movie lovers and is expected to receive good openings.
What To Expect From Gang?
Top Notch Performances From The Lead Cast
It is always to watch Suriya performing heists on screen and we have enjoyed him doing that in films like Ghatikudu, Veedokkade etc. Gang is also similar kind of film and we can expect a superb performance from this talented actor. Watching the trailer and all the promos of the film, Suriya seems to be in top form in this film and when he is given a scope for performance, it is an absolute treat to watch him on screen. Suriya seems to have two extremely different roles to portray in the film, which he must have performed effortlessly. Keerthy Suresh looks absolutely gorgeous in the trailer and posters and her chemistry with Suriya looks fresh. Ramya Krishnan, the senior actress who made a striking comeback with Baahubali series is playing an important role in the film and we can expect a terrific performance from her as always. The film also has senior actors Brahmanandam, Senthil, Aanand Raj, Karthik and others in supporting roles from whom we can expect good performances any day.
Rocking Music From Anirudh
The music for this film has been composed by the very talented young music director Anirudh Ravichander. The songs of the original version Thaana Serndha Koottam have become super hit in Tamilnadu, especially Sodakku has been ruling the charts from few weeks. The audio of the Telugu version has been released a few days ago to a positive response. Anirudh has been producing some of the best albums in the recent times and his music and background score for Tamil film Velaikkaran and Agnyaathavaasi was one of the major assets for those films. We can expect similar kind of work for Gang as well. He shares a superb chemistry with the director Vignesh Shivn which can be helpful in giving good background score.
Nice Direction and Screenplay From Vignesh Shivn
Vignesh Shivn, in one of his recent interviews, admitted that Gang is inspired by Akshay Kumar starrer Special 26. If at all he can recreate the magic of that film, then he surely has a winner in hands. We can expect a water-tight screenplay in this film as it has some thrilling especially during the latter part of the film. Though there's nothing much for the mass audience in Special 26, Vignesh Shivn seems to have taken a lot of care to present it in an entertaining manner for the South audience. The songs are peppy and the visuals look vibrant and colorful in Gang, which is what mass audience expect from Suriya's film. Vignesh Shivn, with his first film, proved that he is here to stay. We can expect superb work from him this time too as he has a blockbuster story and terrific actors.
